The Early Days of Rock ‘n’ Roll:
A Multimedia Presentation by Pete Elman

Tuesday, September 11, 6:30 p.m.
New Orleans and the Deep South 1955-1960: the cradle of rock and roll. From the fields to the factories to Friday night. This program will cover the early days of the golden age of American rock n’ roll, 1955-62. Early rhythm and blues, the first wave: Leadbelly, Robert Johnson at the crossroads, early R&B, Fats Domino (New Orleans) Little Richard (Georgia) Bo Diddley (Mississippi) and Chuck Berry (Missouri). Why does this music swing so much?  Part of a larger course that is taught chronologically and geographically–“a road trip” of key American musical movements, the course is a cultural and musical journey through those periods and places where certain regions were at the forefront of American popular music; it is taught through several media: lecture, slide show with photographs, charts and maps, recorded music, film clips, the use of live music, and a brief question and answer session. Mr. Elman will play piano and sing, and perform examples from the period in class.  PETE ELMAN, musician, writer and teacher, has been a professional musician since 1963, working as a keyboardist, trombonist, guitarist, bassist, arranger, composer, studio musician, recording artist and producer. He has performed and recorded with Grammy-winning writer/producer Rick Nowels (Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Celine Dion), Tom Johnston (Doobie Brothers) and Stef Burns (Huey Lewis and the News). Along the way he has composed, arranged, and produced music for film, TV, commercials, and several recording artists. In the 1990s, he released four acclaimed solo instrumental albums. As a journalist, Pete covered sports for the Cape Cod Times from 2000-2011, and continues to work as a freelance sportswriter. He taught public school from 2002-2015, and in 2013 published an acclaimed children’s musical picture book, Seasons Rhymes in Time. He is currently teaching eleven popular courses on American music for Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Bay Area universities including UC Berkeley; among them: Turn, turn, turn, a regional chronological journey through the golden age of rock and roll, 1955-1970.  Pete is currently working on several book projects.

Instead of Scared, be Prepared! Let’s Talk About Death
Saturday, September 15, 10:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Join us for a free workshop hosted by Anastasia and Chad Kidd, co-pastors of the First Parish Truro UCC.  Nearly 90% of Americans think it’s important to talk about their wishes for end of life care, yet less than 30% have actually done it.  Most of us are too scared to discuss it!  Because it can feel so overwhelming to acknowledge our mortality, we put off making decisions until it is too late.  Do you know a healthcare proxy from a DNR?  Do your loved ones know what is important to you at the end of your life?  The Reverends Kidd will provide an informative and relaxed workshop on the many resources available nowadays both for preparing for important conversations with those who matter most in your life, and for dying on your own terms.  Their combined experience and compassionate, energetic personalities make them ideal coaches as we learn more about what questions need to be asked and answered, all in an informal setting intended to be productive and—yes—even fun.  A light lunch will be served.  Please sign up by calling the Truro Library at 508 -487-1125.  Both reverends are busy outside of the First Parish Truro UCC.  Rev. Dr. Anastasia Kidd is Director of Enrollment at Boston University’s School of Theology. Her ministerial goals include helping to shape sacred and hospitable space, as well as helping people navigate vocational and personal life paths.   Rev. Chad William Kidd serves as the Pastoral Ministries Manager at Brooksby Village, a large continuing care retirement community in Peabody, MA; as the Minister of Music at the First Congregational Church of Reading, UCC, in Reading, MA; and as Director of the Boston University School of Theology Seminary Singers.  A former hospital chaplain, he is familiar with varied end-of-life experiences, including hospice.  Please join us for this exceptional opportunity, and become part of the minority of Americans who have their end-of-life ducks in a row.

September's selection is Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
Oryx and Crake is at once an unforgettable love story and a compelling vision of the future. Snowman, known as Jimmy before mankind was overwhelmed by a plague, is struggling to survive in a world where he may be the last human, and mourning the loss of his best friend, Crake, and the beautiful and elusive Oryx whom they both loved. In search of answers, Snowman embarks on a journey–with the help of the green-eyed Children of Crake–through the lush wilderness that was so recently a great city, until powerful corporations took mankind on an uncontrolled genetic engineering ride. Margaret Atwood projects us into a near future that is both all too familiar and beyond our imagining. Copies are available at the circulation desk for check out.
