End of August/September  2018

Pastor Nikki's Notions

Dear Friends,

Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”- Matthew 19:14

Rally Day is September 9. This special day in the church year is intended to bring us back together as a church body, after a summer’s worth of adventures away from one another. It marks the return to programs that took a summer hiatus, such as vocal choir, handbell choir and Little Dresses for Africa. It also marks the beginning of a brand-new year of Sunday School! And the Christian Education Ministry Team is excited to offer some incredible new programming to bring our children more fully into our community. Our new children’s programming is designed to be more robust and to welcome our children as full-fledged members of our community. Among the changes we are implementing is that we will offer more opportunities for intergenerational worship services throughout the Sunday School year. In fact, kids will stay with us in worship on every communion Sunday and on a couple of other key dates on the church calendar.

I realize that some folks might feel a bit nervous about this. So, I’d like to explain a little bit about the concept of and the reasoning behind intergenerational worship. I’ll begin with what intergenerational worship is NOT. It is not: 1. Glorified Sunday School (with adults invited), 2. Church for kids (No, kids in church does not mean that we will have church for kids), 3. Family Worship (While intergenerational worship does afford families an opportunity to participate in something meaningful together, it is NOT designed around the family unit). So if it’s not any of these, then what IS intergenerational worship? Simply put: Intergenerational worship is worship in which people of every age are understood to be equally important. It’s where, just like we have large-print bulletins and hearing amplification devices to assist aging folks in worship, we might also have an activity table somewhere in the sanctuary to help our youngest members in their worship. It is a time for the WHOLE Body of Christ to be together, each bringing their distinct needs and their unique gifts to our worship of God.

There are a multitude of reasons to participate in intergenerational worship. For instance, a study from the Fuller Youth Institute in 2010 showed that “churches that encouraged intergenerational connections and had youth that felt involved and connected to the larger church, were places where the youth also had a much greater chance of remaining in the church post high school.” And a 2016 study from the same institute found that churches that retain their young people, and even grow in the millennial sector of their population, are ones that cultivate “warm intergenerational relationships.” The same study notes that “Involving young people in every ministry of the church has allowed these congregations to thrive with authenticity and intergenerational relationships.” Simply put, our children need to feel included in our congregation at large from an early age if their faith is to be something that sustains them all throughout their lives. There are many benefits to children participating in corporate worship, which cannot be quantified by research studies. We must remember that Jesus tells us to be like children, which would imply that they have something important to teach us adults in worship.

Now, I want to put parents’ and grandparents’ minds at ease. Every week, there will be programming for your young ones. Sometimes, that programming will be a part of our worship service. On other weeks, it will be outside of the sanctuary, but there will always be something offered. And I encourage parents and grandparents to watch your mail, as you all will be receiving calendars with Sunday School offerings through December. I look forward to this exciting new endeavor with all of you!

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Nikki

JOYCE’S LAST DAY

On August 26, Joyce Block will lead us in song for the last time as our music director because she is retiring. On this special day, the vocal choir will sing and the handbell choir will ring, and everyone who has ever sung or rung in either or both of these choirs is invited to come for one last song with Joyce! Short rehearsals will occur before the service: bells at 8 and vocal choir at 8:45. Joyce and Dwayne's son, Rev. Paul Block, will deliver the sermon that day, and their daughter, Gretchen Cerveny will accompany the vocal choir on piano. If you have never sung or rung, you’re still encouraged to make it to service on that day to show your appreciation for her ministry with us. Let’s all be sure to show Joyce our love!

WELCOME

WELCOME OUR NEW MUSIC DIRECTOR

The session is pleased to announce that we have offered the position of music director to Robin Wohlfeil. Robin is sure to bring her own style and flare to this position, so let’s all make her feel welcome! Her first day as music director will be September 2.

WELCOME OUR NEW OFFICE ASSISTANT

The session is pleased to announce the hiring of Cassie Jackson to keep our office running smoothly. Since Cassie is not a member of Delafield Presbyterian Church, everyone is encouraged to reach out to her and get to know her. Also, when planning your event at church, do not assume that she will automatically know about it! Send her all of the information for every event you plan at the email address for the church office.

WELCOME OUR NEW CLERK OF SESSION

Delafield Presbyterian Church also now has a new clerk of session. Please take a moment to thank Nina Wulff for stepping into this important role.

From August 26 through September 2, Delafield Presbyterian Church will be hosting Family Promise. Please pray for the families that will be staying with us and for all of the volunteers who will be helping to make this happen. Additionally, if you have any interest in volunteering or providing food for Family Promise, contact Jane Lurvey at jlurvey@wi.rr.com.

On Wednesday, September 5 from 3-7 P.M., Delafield Presbyterian Church will host a blood drive for the Blood Center of Wisconsin. There is a sign-up sheet on the main bulletin board, if you’d like to donate blood.

RALLY DAY

Sunday, September 9 is Rally Day! This marks the beginning of Sunday School and other programs that take a break over the summer months. For Rally Day, the Christian Education Committee has planned a special worship service for all ages that is designed to teach us all about the different things that we do in worship. There will also be a backpack blessing during the service. Plus, we will cook out and dedicate the new playground after the service, with Michael Keefe, the Eagle Scout who did this project for our church. It will be a great chance to thank him for all of his hard work. You can register children for Sunday School on that day as well. We hope to have all of our children and families with us on that day; it should be lots of fun!

VOCAL AND HANDBELL CHOIRS RESUME
In September, both our vocal choir and our handbell choir will resume, under the leadership of Robin Wohlfeil. The first meeting of the vocal choir will be on Thursday, September 6 at 7 P.M. At that time, the group will choose a time to meet regularly for rehearsals.
Robin will reach out to the handbell choir to set a time for their first meeting.

TEEN DISCUSSION GROUP CALENDAR FOR THE FIRST SEMESTER

With the beginning of Sunday School comes the beginning of a new year of our teen discussion group, coordinated by Adrienne O’Neil. September’s discussion group will be held on September 16 and will be led by Gay Ruby and Kate Walkowski. The topic is “Social Media: Lifeline or Leash.” It will help teens to understand healthy and safe ways to navigate their online interactions.

CRAFT FAIR

On September 22, Delafield Presbyterian Church will host our annual craft fair. Everyone is invited to come and begin Christmas shopping! Additionally, volunteers are needed for set up, tear down, and running the food and drinks station. If you’d like to volunteer, contact Carol Buech at cbuech@wi.rr.com.

Little Dresses for Africa Resumes
It’s time to make little girls in Africa feel special again!  Little Dresses meetings will resume in September.  We now have patterns for four different styles of little dresses and lots of fabric to make them.  We always need help from those who sew and those who prefer to iron, cut fabric or perform any other of our non-sewing needs.  We also assemble kits of the materials needed for a dress.    Some of our members prefer to sew at home using these kits.    We will meet the third Wednesday of the month from 12-4 in our conference room.  Come for an hour or the entire time.   All are welcome; sewing skills not required.
Meeting dates for the remainder of 2018 are Wednesdays, September 19, October 17, November 21 and December 19.
Monthly Food Pantry Collections Continue

Our food pantry collections will continue each month here at DPC!

August 26th:  With the start of school around the corner, we will be collecting school lunch items.

September 30th: Don't forget about the littlest ones in need... Baby food and Formula are always greatly needed at the pantry.

Anything you bring is always greatly appreciated by all the food pantries.  Thanks for your generosity!
Presbytery Gathering
All members are invited to join the next Presbytery Gathering on September 11th, from 4PM to 8PM at Kettle Moraine United Presbyterian Church. It will consist of an outdoor worship service, a guest speaker, a meal and a business meeting. If you're interested, talk to Pastor Nikki.

Walk of Faith Bricks

Now is the time to order a commemorative brick for a loved one.  Honor your family, or a beloved family member by adding a brick to our beautiful Walk of Faith located outside the West door under the pergola. We will be dedicating new bricks on November 4th following DPC's Day of Remembrance service, followed by a light luncheon in the Fellowship Hall.  Bricks are $100 each and will be engraved and set before the dedication.  Just fill out the form, and leave in the box on the Deacon's Table in the Fellowship Hall no later than September 30. If you have any questions, contact Rosie Lawson or Stacia Faith.
Deacon's Corner
The Board of Deacons for DPC take this opportunity to thank everyone for their generosity this past year for participating in all the fundraisers.   Everything makes a real difference to those in need and through our local programs and fundraising, you and DPC lend a helping hand.

REMEMBER TO: Continue bringing in grocery receipts from Piggly Wiggly's and Sentry, and place in the blue, plastic bin on the Deacon's table in the Fellowship Hall.

REMEMBER TO: Bring those soda and beer cans (aluminum) to church and place in the designated bin in the outside trash area.  These are "cashed in" and helps pump up our coffers for local missions.

REMEMBER TO: Continue donating to our Food Pantry Program each fourth Sunday.

REMEMBER TO: Bring travel size toiletries from your travels to be donated to the needy.

REMEMBER TO: Drop your loose change and bills in the offering plate the first Sunday of each month. Your generosity is appreciated and helps with our local missions.

REMEMBER TO: Ask a Deacon if they need help!  Extra hands make light work, and there's always something to do!

REMEMBER TO: Welcome newcomers when you see them!

Most of all, REMEMBER TO: Come Worship With Us!

Blessings to you and yours as we move forward into our church year!
