BETC Youth Works Interns
This summer, we had the pleasure of hosting 23 high school interns every Monday through Durham's Youth Works program. Together we weeded the garden (multiple times!), repaired chicken coops, mucked out the duck coop, fixed and installed signage, and even built a small duck run. We had a great time with these young folks every week and got so much done! Check out their instagram @betc_interns to see more!

CSA Summer Interns
In years past, the Hub Farm has run a CSA with Youth Works Interns. This year, the BETC program changed a little bit, and we enlisted the help of four interns from Northern High School instead! The Fab Four work one day a week, for the duration of our 8 week CSA. They are responsible for animal care, food safety, equipment sanitation, harvesting, and packing boxes. They also get the chance to learn more about other aspects of food production including beekeeping, added-value products (like pickles, pesto, and spice mixes) and other things that interest them!
They work together to get beautiful produce to CSA members and Farm Stand customers! That's right, if you missed out on the CSA, you can still get your fix of Hub Produce from 3-5pm on Tuesdays at the North Regional Library. Come visit us!

Summer Programming Highlights
Even while school is out, we have managed to host student groups frequently! We have had some field trips from camps like Merrick Moore, Montessori School of Raleigh, and Bell Yeager Baptist Church! It's fun to be able to show off our summer fruits and vegetables through taste-tests and cooking with our students. Cucumber-watermelon salad, anyone?!
We have also been building a stronger relationship with the library next door. Not only do we have our Farmstand there (on Tuesdays from 3-5pm, in case you forgot), but we also are partnering on some programming. Last week, we hosted the library's regular storytime for preschoolers, toddlers, babies (and parents/caregivers!) at the Hub Farm! It was a real treat to have some younger folks out on our floating lab!

Coming Soon! Events and Construction
|
|
As we begin thinking about the fall, and seasonal changes, there are some more changes coming to the Hub Farm! Construction on our greenhouse is slated to begin in the next month, with grading and a concrete pad coming first! Construction on the pavilion should begin this October, so stay tuned for updates! We are hoping for minimal disruption to our usual activities and programming, but are mentally preparing to get creative if we don't have access to all the space we are used to!
EVENTS COMING SOON:
Volunteer Workdays:
September 8th, 9am-12pm
The rest of the fall workdays will be posted soon! Keep an eye out!
Plant Communities Class:
This course, taught by local environmental educator, Paul Cameron, will be held Saturdays mornings, September 8 - October 6, 2018. The first class will be held at the Hub Farm.
Please see our website for more information!
The class is free and pre-registration is required by Friday, August 17.
