A Day for a Daydream

for July 26, 2018
We're open from 3 to 7 pm every Thursday.

Dear Market Friends,

It’s going to be another spectacular market, with our farmers and vendors bringing in just about everything that your dear heart desires. Summer veggies are abundant, from cherry tomatoes to new potatoes, green beans, and all the other classics. I’m hoping that all the farmers got the rain that was so much needed to bring on the crops.

For just a sample of this week’s harvests, here’s the Everdale list: Rainbow beets, red beets, callaloo, orange carrots, rainbow carrots, chard, cilantro, field cucumbers, English cucumbers, dill, bulb fennel, bunched flowers, green kale, black kale, red kale, kohlrabi, head lettuce, fresh onions, green onions, parsley, radishes, salad mix, specialty greens, spinach, and zucchini. (That’s part of their crop of new farmers in the photo at the top.)

Debbie Wiecha says she will have the first small load of peaches, and the heat has made the flavour concentrated and sweet. This is just the beginning, so if you don’t get some this time come back next week.

All Sorts Acres news: “As always we have our premium sheep milk gelato made with our own milk, local, organic, and fair trade ingredients. We will also have our new Happy Sheep Yoghurt! This is a mild, creamy, and delicious plain yoghurt that is ideal with fresh local fruit, granola, or the base of a creamy dip.

If all goes well we will have some brand new cream cheese. Being huge cream cheese fans, we had to try making some. Small, tester jars should be available to try for an special intro price! AND we finally have lamb again! Shoulder, leg, loin chops, shanks, and some ground. Cheers from Tim, Jennifer, and the critters.”

“Our chooks send me on an egg hunt daily to find their favourite spots to lay eggs”, says Jennifer

Last week a shopper complained to the helper at Knuckle Down Farm‘s table about excessive packaging she’d seen used for Knuckle Down products in a store. Funny thing is, you can only get Jenny‘s excellent vegetables at the market, the farm, or via a CSA membership, and packaging is always kept to the bare minimum. Which reminds me to remind you….Bring a Market Kit of your own waste-reducing reusables, plus any bags you’ve got to share!

Sweet Seduction will be joining us every other week, with this delectable list of sweet and savoury baking, all 100% organic or very close:
Pot Pies (chicken, beef and/or pulled pork)
Fruit pies (both regular and gluten-free)
Maple Tarts
Key Lime Tarts
French Lemon Curd Tarts
Raspberry & Strawberry Coconut Tarts
Biscotti
Cookies – Chocolate Chip, Peanut Butter, Oatmeal Raisin, Ginger etc.
Brownies
Fruit Scones

Windswept Cider and Catalyst Community Herbals will make their monthly visits to the market, and East from Herbal Ghee will be visiting to introduce you to spiced ghees made from Ontario butter for your cooking pleasure.

Paul Magder, Fern Mosoff
, and the other good people from The Repair Café will be with us again this week, so think about what you need repaired and bring it along! We won’t have dedicated bike fixers this time (come back next month for that) but appliances, electronics, clothing and more are on the list of what they’ll tackle.
See you at the market!
Anne Freeman
