The 2018 New Zealand Best Practice Food Allergen Management Award
 Congratulations to Talley’s Ice Cream who have won the inaugural award, sponsored by the Allergen Bureau in collaboration with the New Zealand Institute of Food Science and Technology (NZIFST). Allergy New Zealand helped to promote the award to food manufacturers, and our Allergy Advisor, Penny Jorgensen, was on the award committee. The award was presented at the NZIFST Conference on 4th July 2018. Highlighted in the award citation were several aspects of Talley's food allergen management procedures including excellent staff training.
Penny Jorgensen says the award is important because it helps to promote best practice in the industry. “Good food allergen management leads to more accurate and clearer information on labels about allergen content. This helps consumers with food allergies make informed choices and more easily identify food safe for them." |

Lupin and allergen labeling
It has now become mandatory for food businesses to label Lupin as an allergen if present in food in Australia or New Zealand. It has been mandatory for allergen labelling in the EU and UK since 2014. Lupin is best known in New Zealand as a garden flower with tall, colourful spikes. Overseas, lupin seeds in some varieties have been found to be a nutritious food with high protein content and popular for use such as a gluten-free flour. However, lupin is a legume and related to peanut and soybean. There have been reports of lupin allergy since 1994, including people with peanut allergy who have cross-reacted with lupin.
Initially introduced as a crop in Australia for animal feed, it has now entered the Australian food supply, and likely to be in New Zealand's in the future. There have been some reports of lupin allergy in Australia, and a proposal to add it to the Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) Food Code mandatory labelling list was approved in 2016.
