Never before in recent New Start history have we had a student win a hat trick of awards during the program. Jamelle Messinger was an outstanding New Start participant. As a commuter, he went out of his way to attend New Start events and encouraged his peers to attend as well. He excelled in his math class where he received the Outstanding Student Award. He performed at the New Start B.L.A.S.T. Variety Show, winning third place for his awesome roping ability.

Finally, Jamelle is the winner of our Rudy B. McCormick III Award of Excellence for New Start 2018

Rudy McCormick exemplifies how students should experience the New Start Summer Program.  He participated in the Program in the summer of 1992, enrolling in a rigorous Calculus course and completing the program with flying colors.  Rudy had such a wonderful experience that he remained with the program in student assistant positions as both Peer Advisor and Student Coordinator and later professionally as Coordinator and ultimately the Director of the New Start Summer Program.

Rudy challenged students to take advantage of their summer opportunities, to take risks, and to leave the program with no regrets.  His love for the mission and goals of the New Start Summer Program are evident and his passion for providing professional and personal development opportunities for the student staff and participants is unparalleled.

Established in 2005, the recipient of the Rudy B. McCormick Award of Excellence fulfills the following criteria:

•Participates in multiple components of the program
•Initiates both social and academic opportunities for fellow students
•Builds a sense of community among their peers.
•Good academic standing in their coursework (C or better)
•Establishes positive relationships with multiple members of the New Start Summer Program personnel.

Nominated by members of the staff, Jamelle truly represents how we hope students see and participate in the New Start summer program.
