MARCY-HOLMES MONTHLY

AUGUST 2018

IN THIS ISSUE:  Why Serve? | National Night Out 2018 | Parking Task Force
Why do I serve on the MHNA Board?
“I serve on the MHNA board to help communicate neighborhood concerns to city leaders and decision makers in order to influence policy and program decisions for the betterment of the neighborhood and the city.

For me, the greatest benefit of being involved at the neighborhood board level is the exposure to the city’s planning processes, access to elected officials and city staff, and the opportunity to speak for the neighborhood’s residents to influence how the city serves its citizens.”

— Erich Wunderlich
It’s not too soon for YOU to think about running for the 2019 MHNA Board—whether you’re a new or long-time resident, renter, homeowner, elder or student, living on the riverfront, in Dinkytown, on 8th/9th, or anywhere in between.
Why should YOU run for the MHNA Board?
Because you want to flex your leadership muscles—or learn how to.
For 7 more reasons and to find out about running for election this October, visit the MHNA website or contact Nominations Committee chair, John Capecci, john@capeccicom.com

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is coming on AUGUST 7th!

National Night Out is an annual event that encourages residents to get out in the community, hold block parties, and get to know their neighbors as a way to assist crime prevention. It's a great way to promote community-police partnerships and enjoy a Minnesota summer evening surrounded by friends and family.

Join us for a night of fun, food, CAKE!, music, games and community building at Marcy-Holmes' National Night Out gathering!

Where: 500 block of 7th Ave SE
When: Tues August 7, 2018 • 6-8 pm

WHAT'S HAPPENING?
  • a Potluck meal: bring a dish to share, if you can!
  • a cake walk: bring a homemade or store-bought cake/pie/cookies to donate!
  • live music from neighborhood musicians!
  • Firetruck visit!
  • Fun activities for children!
  • Visit with old and new neighbors!
WE RECOMMEND BRINGING A FOLDING CHAIR (if you can) and PLATES & CUTLERY FOR YOUR USE. We will have paper products available, but would love to cut back on waste, if possible!  THANKS!

PARKING TASK FORCE MEETING

Although the date and time of the next meeting still needs to be determined (likely late August), the MHNA Parking Task Force is looking to meet in order to conduct a "training" session for the proposed "Proper Parker" program. Please stay tuned for updates about this upcoming meeting. If you'd like to be part of this project, please read below:
BACKGROUND
To improve safety and reduce the number of parking violations in the neighborhood, this task force is looking for residents to keep an eye on our streets and help flag vehicles that are blocking driveways, parked too close to stop signs/crosswalks, or are otherwise parked illegally.

As a volunteer “proper parker,” you will place a flyer on the windshield of the car, informing the vehicle owner of his/her infraction. We need your help.

Please fill out this form if you'd like to get involved with helping this project or for possible training dates.
