Stitching with Secondary Patterns

The July Island Batik Ambassador challenge was to make a quilt that created secondary patterns when the blocks were connected. I shared my block last issue and here's a glimpse of my finished design. The Checker block has so many possible variations for setting the blocks.

This week I'm sharing this latest finish in conjunction with hosting TGIFF. I hope you'll click over and share your finish today.

Around the Web

The Creative Spaces Blog Hop is underway. Check in daily at Cherry Blossom Quilting for links to each post in the hop.

QuiltFill and PreQuilt are both online tools for trying some color on your quilt before you get to cutting fabric.

Inspired by Anne's work, I did a little reading about WPAP art. I love the bold use of color!

I love seeing kids making their first quilt!

Jessica shared her technique for hanging mini quilts.

Have you evaluated your fabric stash lately? Jess shared about her process of reorganizing her fabric and scraps.
My week started with a morning of demos at Santa Clara Valley Quilt Association. I presented four sessions of Creating a Scrappy Slab. I shared my technique for creating a slab, including tips from Kelly's book Stash Statement (affiliate link). Kelly recently shared a video of her Improv Piecing technique. I use my Kai 8-inch Serrated Patchwork Scissors, which coordinated nicely with my purple scraps I stitched together during my demo. ;-) This is the technique I used in Citrus Beach Retreat, which is currently hanging at the California State Fair.

I finished my Checker quilt and started piecing my August Island Batik project, featuring the vibrant colors of Petting Zoo (see above).

The week has also been filled with spending time with family and friends. Good food, fun outings, and beautiful weather. I'm enjoying the long days of summer. August will bring a bit of a break from sewing as we enjoy the last couple weeks of summer.

P.S. My teaching and lecturing schedule can now be found on my website.

Back and Forth is designed to feature a medium to large scale print, surrounded by coordinating fabrics. It works well with a variety of solids or blenders. It's the perfect size for a baby or as a cuddle quilt for a toddler.
