Hot Dog Heaven Finally! Buffalo is making headlines for a fare other than wings. USA Today says "Forget wings - Buffalo is a hot dog town."
I know this is not earth-shaking news–in fact, it's not news at all for most Buffalonians. But even locals are liable to learn a thing or two about franks in the Buff from this surprisingly deep dive into hot dogs in Buffalo. Did you know that there are two types of hot dogs (both Sahlen's, of course)? Natural casing and skinless. Both are a combination of pork and beef, but which you use depends on how your going to cook it. Hint: think about the difference between Ted's and Louie's. Hmmmm..
Confession: I'm firmly in the charcoal-grilled camp, and my favorite place to go for a hot dog is Red Top out on Route 5 in Hamburg. Not only are the hot dogs the best, but the "cottage fries" are amazing and they make a top-notch chocolate shake (real milk, real ice cream and lots of chocolate). The best part, however, is the view of the lake. I time my visits for sunset. The crazy thing is, this place opens at Easter and doesn't shut down for the season until Thanksgiving. You can pretend it's summer for nearly eight months of the year.
