High temperatures and threat of thunderstorms didn’t diminish the spirit of the 90 plus Guild members as they gathered in the Festival Theatre Lobby on Monday, July 16 to enjoy the skill testing Playbill Quiz and the 50/50 Draw.

A Decade of Dollars for Shaw!
Paddy Parr – Gardening Chair
“Congratulations! Your 2018 Retiree Volunteer Grant application has been approved!!”
 For retired RBC banker, Brian Parr, this welcome message confirms a $500 donation to the Shaw coffers for the tenth year in a row, recognizing his efforts as a Guild Gardener.
Since 1999, RBC has donated more than $15 million to recognize the volunteer hours of service provided by their employees and retirees to communities across Canada.
Brian donates in excess of 100 hours annually, toiling in the Festival and Royal George Gallery gardens with the Tuesday morning green-thumb volunteers, thus making him eligible for RBC support. In the past decade, the accumulated $5,000 grant funding has been earmarked for numerous projects, such as, irrigation up-grades (Linden Allee 2009-2010), the development of the Lost Keys garden (2012-2013), replacement of plants lost to winter-kill (2014) and insect infested plant materials (45 lost roses in 2015), installation of tree up-lighting in the Wooded Meadow (2017), and this year, clearing and finishing an outdoor lounge area for the Studio Theatre crew.
So sun hats off to RBC for encouraging their employees and pensioners to serve their community through voluntarism, and partnering through the grant program financially! Win-win for all!!

Oh What a Lovely Game said the Magician's nephew when told of
THE ANNUAL SHAW versus STRATFORD CRICKET MATCH
Date: Monday, August 27
Time: Noon
Location: Memorial Park, Niagara on the Lake (aka The Commons)
Cost: $30
 On arrival you will be offered a glass or two of Pimms No. 1 and later will be served a picnic lunch accompanied by your choice of red or white wine. All this whilst watching the teams battle it out on the green cricket pitch.
We will break around 3.30pm to join both teams and their supporters for the iconic Cricket Tea served in the Lobby of The Festival Theatre.
We will return to the grounds for the "final overs" of the match and will cheer on our team to, hopefully, a glorious victory!
We suggest you bring folding chairs and wear whites if your wardrobe allows.

Have you ever wanted to be an extra in a Shaw Production?
There is still time to volunteer!
Diana Donnelly is directing a play called Far Away by Caryl Churchill for the Director’s Project this season. She has asked the Guild to help with a scene requiring extras to do a crossover on stage in a pivotal scene.
Volunteers should be available the week of September 17 to 22 to attend one dress rehearsal and 3 performances of the play on Thursday September 20 at 10 am, Friday September 21 at 1 pm and Saturday September 22 at 10 am.

Elections 2018 – Executive Positions
In November several positions on the Shaw Guild Executive will be coming to the end of their current term. Anyone who has been a Shaw Guild member for at least 1 year prior to nomination may put his/her name forward to the Nominating Committee to stand for election at the AGM on November 25.
The following executive positions are for a term of 2 years. Executive members are expected to prepare monthly reports and attend meetings on the third Monday of the month from January until November. Good computer skills are necessary for all of these positions.

Host Comments
Greg Fedoryn – Hosting Chair
Hosting has now reached the halfway point in the season, as we are now booking into mid-August.
To support our new Hosts we conducted a training and orientation session in June for the new Hosts which included a discussion on first Hosting experiences. We also were very fortunate to have a front of House tour with Laurie Harley, our Shaw Guild VP, who showed us all the important things our Hosts should know including the accessibility facilities in each of the three theatres.
I am very pleased to have received such positive feedback from our new Host members on their experiences with the Guild and their Host assignments. Thanks to all our Hosts for welcoming and training our newest Hosts.
Thanks as well to Cheryl Morris who developed a computer application to assist in tracking Host volunteers and assignments and Rob Carson who does the maintenance when each Captain completes their assignment. Our Captains have found this very helpful in ensuring all our Hosts get a turn.
I again wish to thank the entire Host Team for their outstanding dedication, with 258 shows Hosted and 676 volunteer hours already invested to June 28, 2018, in getting the job done.
