Pastor’s Sunday School

In Pastor’s Sunday School we study the lectionary texts which follow the church calendar. For Sunday July 29:
• 2 Samuel 11:1-15
• Psalm 14 (UM746)
• Ephesians 3:14-21
• John 6:1-21
It’s an informal study, always open to all, at 8:30 AM in the New Room.

Upcoming Events

What exactly is Christ Ministry Center?

Rev. Dr. William Jenkins began this ministry center after he retired. He writes, “In 2011 Christ Ministry Center (CMC) began as an urban ministry center built upon Jesus’ teaching in Matthew 25: "I was hungry, thirsty, naked, sick, in prison and a stranger...and you cared for me!"” As an expression of this passage here is what CMC does today.
  • HUNGER - Good Neighbor Center, the CMC Food Pantry, UCSD and Cal-State Free Clinics help feed our neighbors.
  • THIRST - Spiritual dehydration is met by over a dozen congregations who offer ministries to quench spiritual thirsts, like Jesus demonstrated with the woman at the well (John 4)
  • CLOTHING – CMC receives donated clothes and then offers thee clothing to our neighbors.
  • SICKNESS – Two Free Clinics operate on Tuesday afternoon (UCSD) and Thursday afternoon (Cal-State). UCSD Free Dental Clinic will open soon.
  • PRISON – We now have the opportunity to “proclaim release to the (refugee) captives” through the GateWay Loft and Safe Harbors. Additionally, there is help through 12 Step Support ministries.
  • STRANGERS – Our GateWay Loft Ministry is one of only nine “Welcome Shelters” for immigrants along the Southern US Border. We continue to offer God’s love and safe harbor to those God sends our way.
CMC is indeed the “Seven-Days-A-Week” Church, touching over a thousand lives each week. You can learn more at https://www.cummc.org/ or join us on Sunday, August 19 when Rev. Dr. William Jenkins will preach at St. Mark’s and have a Q&A after-wards about the work of Christ Ministry Center.

GriefShare Sessions August 14 through November 6

GriefShare is for people grieving the death of a family member or friend. We understand that there are other losses in life that create feelings of grief. You might be experiencing a job loss, a divorce, estrangement from a child, or the loss of friends because of a move. This grief is real, but it is not the kind of grief discussed in GriefShare sessions..
GriefShare sessions will be held Tuesday, August 14, through Tuesday, November 6, at 6:30 PM
Lindsey Van Gorder, Licensed Social Worker, will lead video and workbook discussions. Sign ups are encouraged by visiting the office or calling St. Mark’s at 858-273-1480

Vacation Bible School
August 20-24

Vacation Bible School: Off to the Land of Shiner.

Why on earth would a united humanity in the generations following the Great Flood build a massive tower to an unknown Babylonian god? Mm. People have a hard time getting it! Had they not been aware of the God who destroyed all for their disobedience yet saved Noah and his family from the flood?

Vacation Bible School presents five Bible Giants the week August 20—24 from 9:00AM to 11:30AM. We’ll construct that big ol’ tower until we realize that when God observes our city and tower at Shinar, he will confound our speech so we can no longer understand each other. Then we’ll have to scatter to other parts of the world.

Don’t miss the Bible drama. For more information and registration, contact the church at 858-270-1480 or check the web-site for online registration http://www.stmarksumcsd.org/events/2018-vacation-bible-school. Ahh, “Stop the tower!” the God of Israel commands.

Vacation Bible School needs your boxes! We hope you are remembering to save those boxes. Any size or shape, please. VBS participants will construct the Tower of Babel and the Walls of Jericho and the more boxes we gather, the more fun we have. Please hang on to your boxes until after the yard sale then bring them on in to church. Or, a team member will come to you to collect them.

Questions? Karen Scanlon at kws-canlon@gmail.com or phone 858-583-4992.

Church at the Beach

St. Mark’s will celebrate another year of church outside at Tecolote Shores in Mission Bay. Join us on Sundays August 5, 12, 19, and 26, at 8:30 AM. Come and enjoy fresh air, fresh music, and fresh ideas of familiar bible stories. Bring your chairs, your blankets, and your neighbors.

Exciting Announcement

As Lay Leader of St. Mark’s, it is my privilege to announce that Rev. Lydia has a new title. In recognition of her appointment status, and the commitment that we as a congregation and Rev Lydia have made to the future of St. Mark’s, Rev. Lydia Sohn is now recognized as “Senior Minister in Transition.” During the coming year she will be mentored by Rev. Craig, and work with Rev. Jeri, as she becomes familiar with who we are, our needs, and re-searches and implements ways that we can better carry out our ministry in our community and the world. Please welcome Rev Lydia and congratulate her on this formal recognition of the position and trust that she has earned. In partnership with our pastors, we can look forward to many years of continued leadership, ministry and spiritual growth at St. Mark’s.

Giving Thanks:
Sierra Service Project

A huge thank you to Christina Peer and her brother, Brian Mugg, for their leadership on our Sierra Service Project team! By plane and by van, Christina, Brian, Charlee, Livia, Diana, Jolie, and Kai, traveled to Chiloquin, Oregon. Chiloquin is the central town of the Klamath Tribes region. The team spent a week sleeping on a gym floor, working in 100 degree heat, battling mosquitos, and still had an absolutely wonderful time! To quote Jolie, "It was a blast!" Their energy and enthusiasm for helping others is inspiring. Back to that van they traveled in: It wasn't just any van, it was the "Marilyn" and "GeeGee" van in honor of our two biggest team sponsors! Our gratitude goes out to all the sponsors who made this trip possible.
