The Birthday Ride to 3 Floyd’s

It all started 60 years ago on July 16, 1958 when a young cycling enthusiast was born. He didn’t know he was a cyclist until several years later, but once he learned how to ride a bike there was getting him off the thing. There were a few years around the age of 16-19 were fast cars and young girls became more interesting then riding a bike. Then during his 20’s things like jobs and having kids took a higher priority than riding a bike, but after the kids became older he could take the kids with him.

Fast forward to the year of 2018, were this still young man continues to ride his bike. On July 16 he organized a bike ride from New Lenox IL to Munster IN to experience a place called 3 Floyd’s. It’s a restaurant and brewery where the food is trendy, the beer is creative, and the music is load!

The ride consisted mostly of the Old Plank Road and the Thorn Creek trails. The ride was setup so the folks could choose between 4 different distances via 4 different starting locations along the route. An electronic route map and maps to each starting location were provided via the FOS calendar prior to the ride.

Starting in New Lenox the birthday boy rode his bike east on the OPRT and stopping in Frankfort where some of his cycling friends were waiting to join the fun. We then continued east along the trail where we picked up more riders at the Joe Orr Woods locations. Next stop being 3 Floyd’s where we meet with even more friends who arrived in motor vehicles.

We were able to secure seating in the restaurant at a large semi-private table overlooking the brewery. Very quickly the beer was flowing and the food was served a short time thereafter, and everyone was having a great time!
The ride back included a few rain drops for a very short period of time, but no one seemed to mind. We rode the same route backwards, dropping off folks along the way until finally arriving in New Lenox safely.

Everyone loves a happy ending, but wait there’s more! On Wednesday July 18 this young cyclist organized another ride called “The Geary Loop”. It was a Goldilocks day, where the weather was as perfect as one could ever hope for.
The Geary Loop is a 60 mile ride that starts in New Lenox and travels west into Joliet via the OPRT. Then heading north on the roads into Lockport where the hills add to the fun. Continuing north to the Centennial Trail which connects to the Cal Sag Trail where the group stopped for a Subway. Riding south down 76th avenue, meandering through Rubio Woods, and traveling down the Central avenue bike lane until we intersect with the OPRT. Heading west again back to the start were a very large loop had just been completed. A very enjoyable ride was experience by 5 riders.
More cycling adventures yet to come!

Happy Birthday, Steve Geary

June 24 Park Forest Ride

By Al Sturges

This ride took an indirect route to Frankfort, heading north on Central to Yankee Woods, taking a scenic
route through Tinley Park, then returning to the trail on Ridgeland. This is Larry Howard signaling the
left turn.

Here we have Bob Philips with wearing his Waffle House arm protectors. That’s the photographer, Joe
Helsel’s,

As we approached Frankfort, Ed Barsotti, Chief Programs Officer of Ride Illinois, caught up with us. Ed
was returning from riding over to Indiana so we invited him to join us at Cup-A-Joe in Frankfort. Most of
our group is shown here. That’s Ed between Barbara and Bob.

The rest of our group (Dan) apparently didn’t want to be seen with us.
Yes Frankie Newcom behind the camera after a lunch with Mary Lynn mysz Mary Levan and fern bienias recruiting Debbie and Audrey who took this of course our Mary levan insists walking the trails after but we limit her or we would be walking all day we took a break in the rain
