South Coast NRM presents The Noongar Family Field Trip video

The Noongar Family Field Trips have been going for over four years now. These trips provide an opportunity for Noongar people of all ages to get out on-country with the land managers. Due to changes to the Parks and Wildlife act that enable Aboriginal people to use national parks for customary activities, South Coast NRM recognised a need to act as a conduit between these two groups. This is the first step in the right direction of Joint Management of our parks between the Aboriginal community and government agency land managers. To promote this work a short video has been commissioned. Thank you to Green Man Media for their wonderful production.

A partnership with South Coast NRM & Bush Heritage Australia – flora surveys uncover amazing diversity in the Fitz Stirling

Since the first evaluation in 2012, flora and vegetation surveys have been carried out on the following reserves: Monjebup/Yarraweyah, Monjebup North, Red Moort and Chereninup. The importance of Bush Heritage reserves to conservation is highlighted by their differences in vegetation occurrence and distribution and also differences in species distribution. One reserve alone does not adequately conserve the vegetation at a local scale, let alone at a regional scale.

This is further highlighted by the very high plant species diversity, (currently just over 850 native taxa recorded), and knowledge that approximately one quarter of these taxa occur at range limits. Survey effort aside, some perspective on just how diverse the Bush Heritage reserves are can be gauged by comparison with Fitzgerald River National Park. The 850 taxa recorded across 3,637 ha of BHA reserves is 47% of the number of taxa recorded in the park, but in only a little over 1% of its area.

Meredith Spencer and Karen Herlihy, and many others, have provided invaluable assistance in achieving project goals, during this partnership project, part funded by South Coast NRM.

Winning the gorse battles at Lower King

South Coast NRM implemented the Gorse Eradication Strategy for the South Coast NRM Region protecting 150 ha native vegetation from this invasive species. The project completed both initial control at five sites in the City of Albany, focusing on protecting waterways of the Yakamia Creek.

Many sites are under active control, receiving follow up treatment in an effort to prevent further spread. The chief successes include control of outliers at Menang Drive, three sites in Milpara and Lower King. A 25 ha infestation which has an established seed bank has been treated and followed up over the last 4 years, and is now showing signs of success, with only minor seedlings emerging, which can be easily controlled. This site, close to new housing at Elizabeth Street shows that a large mature infestation can be successfully managed, provided there is continuity of control effort. Further monitoring and control will be required in the future to maintain positive results.
