Greetings everyone,
I know we have just only recently completed our 2018 convention, but our committee does not rest.
Our plans to bring you another marvellous VAPS convention in 2019 are well underway.
The committee down in Traralgon have been busy working with local council to give us fantastic facilities and full backing.
Remember to put the last weekend in May 2019 in your diaries!
the date are: May Friday 24th to Sunday 26th
We also are well underway in discussion with a club who has formed a committee for hosting the convention in 2020. Good planning is vital for our organization to succeed and keep ahead, and I am very happy with the diligence and commitment our members give.

I have just returned from a great trip at Uluru. Now the large task of processing those images.
Do you find that when you have returned from a fantastic trip.
Do you still have that high when processing or do you find it an arduous task.
How do you transpose what you have seen from your trip into your images.
Do you tell a story or show what was there.
What do you do with your images afterwards. Turn them into a book, use them in competitions or even do a showing.
If you an image or 2 you would like to show others that you took on a trip.

Dennis Nolan
Dennis Nolan has been a member of the Frankston Photographic Club for 14 years. During that time, he has been a committee member and he was part of the Special Interest Groups that were a key focus of the club’s formative years in training members in post-production, file management and photography.
Dennis was made a life member of the club around 2009 in recognition of his service.
In addition to supporting the club he joined APS in 2007 and soon became involved in the development of image management systems in support of the many APS photographic competitions held annually in Australia. His involvement in APS has been a major focus of his recent years. This dedication and voluntary help to APS benefits photographers not just at club or state level but right across Australia.
Dennis has recently been appointed to the Management Committee of APS where his experience, guidance and knowledge of systems and photographic competitions are immensely valued.
He is also the State Representative for APS and is available to local and prospective new members for advice on APS and its services to photographers, another busy task for Dennis.
Whilst he may not be well known at state level his behind the scene’s work is typical of the many people who give their time freely to promote and support the amateur photographers in Australia.
It is because of his continued work and diligence over many years that VAPS has no hesitation in awarding Dennis Nolan the State Service Award.

John Tiddy
John Tiddy has been a member of Stawell Camera Club since 1994. During these 24 years his work within the community and in the club has been outstanding. Since 2014, he has been the main organiser and presenter for this club’s Basic Skills courses.
This included preparing handouts and PowerPoint presentations for five weekly 2-hour sessions. These courses have always brought new members into the club. In 2017, John and two other club members presented the course at Nhill to encourage people to join and support the Nhill Camera Club. In that year, he was also involved in meetings to help restart a camera club in Horsham and to help restart the Wimmera Inter club competition. In 2006, John presented workshops at the APS convention in Mildura. He has presented many workshops on bird photography, macro photography and the ‘Meet your Neighbours’ field Studio photography techniques at the Stawell Camera club and at events open to the local community.
At the recent 2018 Stawell Camera Club 30th anniversary celebrations, John presented four free workshops that were open to all in the local community. These workshops covered Bird Photography and Macro Photography, including the ‘Meet your Neighbours’ field studio photographic techniques. These were well attended and even attracted some photographers from Horsham. John was the Competition Director for the Nature Group in the Australian Photographic Society and coordinated APS entries to the FIAP Nature Biennial Competitions for more than three years.
Since 2011 John Tiddy has been one of only three Australian photographers who have been invited to be part of the world wide photographic project, ‘Meet your Neighbours’. Since then John has perfected the capture of scientific styled images of insects, spiders, frogs, plants, flowers and even birds found in the local area. These are posted on the ‘Meet your Neighbours’ website along with interesting reports. In his reports John freely shares information on how he captures the images using technique called ‘Field Studio Photography’. The images all feature the subject in front of a white background.
John is one of the original supporting artists for the Wildlife Art Museum Australia that is being developed near Stawell. He has spent many hours capturing images of plants, birds and small creatures that live on the site. John also has a display of prints at the MOCA gallery in Halls Gap. At all times John encourages people to photograph natural subjects in their own locality and he promotes the Stawell Camera club as a way of learning new skills and sharing with other local photographers.
John has presented nature photography workshops and displays of nature photographs at the Grampians Wildflower Show at Galls Gap to encourage people to capture better images of local wildflowers, plants and small creatures.
John became a member of the Stawell Camera Club management committee in 1996 and secretary in 2003 and he still holds that position in 2018. His work has been accepted into national and international exhibitions and is featured in the local Wimmera Catchment Management Authority publications, Grampian’s Tourism brochures and the local hospital annual report. John has had many nature articles published in magazines. Many of his bird photographs are included in the latest WCMA publication ‘The Glovebox Guide to Wimmera Wetland Birds’.
John is a past President of the Victorian Nature Photography group, a position he held for three years, as well as being a committee member for 10 years.
To acknowledge John’s significant contribution to his and other Wimmera Camera Clubs and to national and international photographers, the Stawell Camera Club nominates him for the VAPS state service Award. VAPS is privileged to present him with this significant honour.

VIGEX Digital Salon 2018
The VIGEX 2nd International Digital Photographic Salon
There will be six sections: Monochrome Open, Colour Open, Nature, Creative, Photo Travel and Differences in Society. This final section is a new category for images that reflect on human life in the modern world.
A selection of the exhibition images which includes all awards and all Australian acceptances will be shown in three evening presentations:

Friends of VIGEX Subscriptions 2018-19
Friends of VIGEX subscriptions are used to support each print salon and these funds are not allocated towards the more financially robust digital salons in the alternate years. This means that the next FoV subscriptions will cover the two-year period 2018-19 leading up to the VIGEX 20th Print Salon 2019.
All Friends are invited to renew their subscription now and any new Friends will be especially welcome. Membership Forms for Individual Friends or Camera Club Friends are found on the Friends page of the VIGEX web-site – complete the form electronically for email return or print and post. Subscriptions may be paid using Direct Deposit via EFT

Portrait Group Master Classes at The Melbourne Camera Club
10 photographers, 2 professional models, make-up artists and 3 hours of photography in The Melbourne Camera Club studios. If you are into portrait shooting then this is for you.
With a maximum of 5 shooters per group you will not only get plenty of shooting time but plenty of help from our experienced instructors in all aspects of portrait photography (or we can stay out of your way if you prefer).
Our models will wear a variety of outfits, and there will be ample opportunity to learn some new lighting set ups.
Suitable for experienced and novice portrait shooters.
Cost is $90 for Melbourne Camera Club members, and $130 for non-members.
Numbers are restricted so you must book in advance.

New Traditional Darkroom Prints
Made by the members of The Melbourne Camera Clubs Traditional Darkroom Printmakers Group will be exhibited at the Groups 18th Annual Exhibition, on the weekends of 18-19 and 25-26 August, 2018.
The Exhibition will be open from 10 am to 5 pm,
The Melbourne Camera Club,
cnr. Ferrars and Dorcas Street, South Melbourne.
There is no entry charge, and the Exhibition will be of great interest to all photographers, especially those who enjoy, or remember, working in the darkroom. It provides the opportunity to see some great new darkroom images and meet up with photographers who have a similar interest. The groups hope to see again many members from other clubs who have visited over the year.

INVITATION FROM BERWICK VIEWFINDERS
Berwick Viewfinders cordially invite you to attend a special workshop by Yana Martens on Monday evening, 3 September.
The topic of the workshop is “Posing a Model - Giving Directions”, and Yana will teach the main posing principles, how to give clear instructions, how to use mirroring techniques, build rapport, and avoid common communication mistakes. The workshop will include various practical tasks and useful tips to help you feel comfortable working with people.
Yana has been modelling for over thirteen years, and this experience has given her insights on people’s behaviour in front of the camera and what is most effective when helping people to overcome their insecurities.
Please feel free to join us on Monday 3 September for Yana’s workshop. Berwick Viewfinders Camera Club has a new venue : the Senior Citizens Hall at 110 High Street, Berwick. There will be no charge to visitors for the workshop, but visitors are asked to contribute $3 per head to the cost of the venue.

been a photographer for 35 years and an International
Awards judge for 25 years. He has been awarded

Jackie Ranken
Jackie Ranken is a Grand Master of both the Australian

been a professional Photographer for 35 years and an
international awards judge for 15 years. She has been
awarded AIPP Photographer of the Year, twice AIPP
Landscape Photographer of the Year, runner up in the
World Press awards for documentary Photography,
NSW AIPP Photographer of the Year, twice the NZIPP
Photographer of the Year, NZIPP Creative Photographer
of the Year, NZIPP Illustrative Photographer of the Year
and Creative Portrait Photographer of the year. She is

My name is David Fletcher - I have a long association with VAPS, through the former Horsham Photographic Group.
I have for sale a Nikon D810 (36.3MP) - only taken 5444 frames - asking price $2500.
I know from experience that people can be nervous buying second-hand cameras from dealers when they don't know the history of the camera.
This camera was purchased from JB Hi-Fi in Melb in May 2017, therefore is not a 'grey import' (or a 'refurbished' warranty return from overseas) - important if you are worried about quality and longevity (as I am).
Has taken just 5444 frames - Nikon's professional cameras are shutter-tested to 200,000 frames in their development phase. Still has nearly 1 YR Australian 'My Nikon Life' warranty.

You do not need to be an active judge to be a member.
The prime objective of the Association is to help develop the evaluation and judging skills of members.

A Brief History:
Camera clubs have existed in Melbourne since the 1890’s and an umbrella organisation called the Victorian Photographic Affiliation was formed in 1908. This guided amateur photography in Victoria for forty years. The Victorian Association of Photographic Societies was formed on 27 September 1952 and comprised of 12 clubs. This has grown to more than 70 clubs in Jan 2016. VAPS is a non-profit association that is entirely self-funded. The Association is run by an elected Committee of Management which is responsible for the operations of the Association, and for ensuring the Association fulfils the objectives.
