Greetings from Pavel Kabat
WMO Chief Scientist and Director of Research
Dear WCRP Community, partners, and friends,
On 1 September I joined WMO as Chief Scientist and Director of Research, leading the strategic direction of WMO science and research activities, including WCRP, the World Weather Research Programme, and the Global Atmosphere Watch. I am delighted to be working with the WCRP community to shape the future of the Programme to meet the needs of society, within a growing framework of climate agreements and initiatives. The Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) has shown great initiative in pushing forward with a new strategic plan for the next decade. With objectives of understanding the climate system, understanding future climate and connecting climate research to policy and services, WCRP will be well placed to produce the research and provide the expertise that society requires.
I have personally been very privileged to have been able to be part of and to collaborate with WCRP over many years, including my Chairmanship of the International Satellite Land-Surface Climatology Project (ISLSCP) within GEWEX. My interactions with WCRP and the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) communities were of the most formative and determining in my professional career. It is simply exciting to come back now and to offer my services to this exceedingly successful and, for our current global discourse, absolutely indispensable community!
Pavel Kabat

WCRP Joint Scientific Committee Members
from January 2019
The members of the WCRP Joint Scientific Committee (JSC) as of January 2019 are now confirmed, as selected by the WCRP Co-sponsors: the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (IOC-UNESCO) and the International Science Council (ISC). The selection was based on a balance of geography, discipline, career stage, and gender diversity. As a group, the JSC will be well placed to move the WCRP decadal plan — strategy and implementation — forward. We thank everyone who applied for these positions. The caliber of all applicants was outstanding.

WCRP Spotlight:
Sub-seasonal to Seasonal Prediction Project (S2S)
The International Research Institute for Climate and Society (IRI) Data Library allows you to view, analyze, or download hundreds of terabytes of climate-related data through a standard web browser available on a tablet, computer or smartphone. Best of all, there are really great instructions to get started right away. You can find out more about this impressive initiative here.

2018 International Conferences
on Subseasonal to Decadal Prediction
Earlier this month, over 350 scientists and experts met in Boulder, USA, for the "2018 International Conferences on Subseasonal to Decadal Prediction", which had been jointly convened by WCRP and the World Weather Research Programme (WWRP). The conference week was notable for bringing together researchers from weather and climate prediction different timescales, working toward temporally seamless prediction. The event also advanced seamlessness in the service delivery chain by prominently featuring plenary talks and sessions on bringing research to operations and services. WCRP worked together with US CLIVAR (one of the event's sponsors) to produce daily conference summaries, which you can access on the right side panel of the conference homepage.

Product: Global Sea Level Budget
WCRP Joint Scientific Committee member Anny Cazenave is the lead author on a paper from the WCRP Grand Challenge on Regional Sea Level and Coastal Impacts group, which provides a comprehensive 'state of the science' review of global mean sea level from 1993 to present. The paper is a result of an international effort involving the sea level community worldwide, assessing the various data sets used to estimate components of the sea level budget during the altimetry era. The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) Executive Council recently invited WCRP to attend its 51st Session, to play an active role in the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development. In relation to the WCRP review it was stated:
"that a strong WCRP with relevant and timely activities was crucial to providing the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) with the basis for systematic assessments of scientific knowledge on climate change and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) with the basis for policy decisions. In turn, IOC’s participation in WCRP assisted in informing the proper design of research and systematic observations on climate, its variability and change. IOC’s participation also brought the findings of WCRP to the attention of policymakers."
IOC encourages WCRP to "play an active role in the design and execution of relevant elements of the Implementation Plan of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development."
Find out how to get involved on the Ocean Decade Website.
