ALP National Conference
L4R invites you to attend our next meeting to decide on the strategy we should adopt in the lead up to Labor's National Conference which takes place in December. If we are to have any impact on Labor's refugee policy, we need to focus on the best way of influencing Conference Delegates, whose votes will be paramount in deciding the direction Labor will take in the formation of its refugee policy.
If you feel strongly about which tactics we should employ to promote change, please come along to our meeting. Your input will be welcomed.
Refugee Motion
A number of ALP Branches have supported our refugee motion which we are asking Branches and Federal Electorate Councils (FECs), to support and submit to the Shadow Minister for Immigration and Border Protection Shayne Neumann, with a copy to Opposition Leader Bill Shorten.
The wording of the motion follows at L4RNSWmotion2018
Please support our motion and spread the word in the lead up to the ALP 2018 National Conference which takes place on the 16-17-18 December 2018.
A Platform for Change: Reforming Australian Refugee Policy
The Refugee Council of Australia has just published an impressive platform of reforms which has an extensive number of signatories supporting it. The views in this platform are informed by a broad cross section of expertise from across Australia.
We will decide at our meeting whether to endorse it and add our name to the list.
There are five key policy areas that they believe must change for our country to return to a fair egalitarian nation that will prosper into the future. They are:
-
The permanent end to offshore processing
-
A fair processing for claiming asylum
-
Reform of the immigration detention system
-
A larger and more responsive Refugee and Humanitarian Programme
-
Australia's improved engagement in Asia
It's well worth a read.
