D1.jobs: New opportunities below at UW-Milwaukee, Northwestern & UNC Wilmington. Post your openings here.
Texas Southern AD McClelland was announced as the next SWAC Commish, calling it an "opportunity that was just too great to pass up." He added: "If I could influence [the SWAC] in any positive way, that would be a fulfillment of my lifelong dream." McClelland, who signed a three-year contract, also noted reports back in June that connected him to the opening, "Had that erroneous report not come out, it would not have seemed like it took so long for this to get done. I think the Council of Presidents had July 1 as a target date and we’re in the (second) week of August, so the process went relatively smooth, it just took time to go through the process, negotiate and get all the documentation together." (link)
CBS's Dodd takes a look at eight years of scandals in the Big Ten, beginning with Sandusky at Penn State in 2011 and running through current investigations at Ohio State and Maryland today, and submits that while connecting the incidents as part of an overarching pattern may be unfair, it is not impossible. During that span, Dodd points out, four FB coaches have been let go due to issues not connected to wins and losses while at least 16 high-profile instances of alleged misconduct have impacted 11 of the 14 schools. Commenting on the Nassar case at Michigan State and the current OSU investigation into former physician Strauss, Commish Delany noted: "The fact of it is these are sexual predators. When you see something, you have to say something. We have to get much better than that. We have to become more skeptical. We have to be more skeptical of our coaches, of our doctors, of our commissioners, more skeptical of anybody in power." Delany also cited CDC statistics indicating that one in five women report being sexually assaulted and contended that viewing the issue as strictly a college problem is reductive. "It's a problem for us, but it minimizes an epidemic that is a problem in our country. I, as a conference commissioner, don't have the answer." Speaking specifically about the OSU investigation into whether FB HC Meyer was aware of allegations against former AC Smith, Delany conceded that "it's possible that he lied" and "it's possible he wasn't prepared," but asserted he would not "pre-judge. ... I'm more than willing to let the investigation play out." (link)
Ohio State: Courtney Smith & her legal team met with investigators hired by the university, "She...welcomed the opportunity." (link); $500K has reportedly been set as the budget for the investigation. Hourly rate for law firm Debevoise & Plimpton not to exceed $1,620 per hour. (link); Another knock on the record of former AC Zach Smith as a drunk driving arrest from 2013 surfaces. Smith says he never told HC Meyer about the incident. (link, link); This may be a bit premature, but it's a fair question nonetheless from the USA Today's Myerberg: "If fired by Ohio State, would Urban Meyer get a second chance?" Myerberg gets comments form the likes of Duke HC & former Ole Miss boss Cutcliffe & South Carolina skipper/former Florida HC Muschamp. Answer: "Coaches who spoke on the topic of second chances with USA TODAY Sports echoed an important point as it relates to Meyer’s future: Getting fired comes with its inherent lessons, but getting another shot demands being able to prove that those lessons can produce different results if given the opportunity." (link)
Maryland: The Athletic's Auerbach confirms Terps FB HC Durkin is on paid administrative leave, also talks to the McNair family which says it has not seen the autopsy results yet. (linklink); Interestingly, last year UMD Prez Loh noted leadership challenges every president faces, "As president, I sit over a number of dormant volcanoes. One of them is an athletic scandal. It blows up, it blows up the university, its reputation. It blows up the president." (link); South Carolina Prez Pastides supports FB HC Muschamp on problems with unnamed sources. Pastides: "We’ll read anonymous reports, but it’s very, very hard if you don’t have the backing of someone who stands up and says, 'This is me. I saw it, I heard it, I smelled it,' to really know what to do. And the other thing is really loyalty from a coach who knew the other individual." (link)
Nebraska has a series of safeguards in place to avoid problems like those which have currently beset Ohio State and Maryland, according to AD Moos, who said during his monthly radio show yesterday that there "have to be reporting lines -- there need to be people you can go talk to -- if something may be out of whack." Moos also noted he meets with senior staffers for two hours each week, where he preaches the importance of being proactive. Additionally, Moos plans to hold an all-staff meeting soon for more than 350 employees. "The safety and the well-being of our student-athletes is the most important, right there with getting them toward their degrees academically." (link)
As the Mountain West celebrates its 20th anniversary, Commish Thompson, who has led the league since its inception, reflects on the league's beginning, its progress and its future. Thompson attributes the league's success in part to its creativity and willingness to take chances. "We're pioneers, in a respect, and I think that's a real credit to our membership because we've always been willing to try something different." One of those chances involved starting its own network, which the Mountain West did before any of the 'Power 5' leagues. In addition, the Mountain West played the first two FB games ever on Twitter and Facebook, garnering millions of impressions and expanding the league's visibility. "We've always been willing to try something that's different and that works, and then when it doesn't work [we're] willing to admit 'Let's try something else.'" Thompson also discussed going before Congress to testify on behalf of 'Group of 5' leagues for "not equality, but an opportunity, a chance" to participate in BCS bowls. "You pick your fights, and this was a battle worth challenging." Full interview. (link)
Michigan FB HC Harbaugh says that, as of now, he doesn't expect any of his student-athletes to be suspended for allegedly selling team-issued Jordan Brand shoes, according to The Athletic's Stavenhagen, who notes that Harbaugh was "a little cryptic" and didn't indicate whether the investigation was over." (link); Meanwhile, Kansas Assoc. AD for Public Affairs Marchiony this week indicated it wasn't just schools sponsored by Jordan that should be cognizant of this issue, noting that "we all learn from each other's experiences, both positive and negative. So, when something like this happens, believe me, it spurs discussion on every campus." The main focus for such compliance-related issues, Marchiony added, is education followed by "proactive, preventative measures that the equipment staff takes to try to ensure that this does not become an issue here." (link)
Courier-Journal columnist Sullivan examines the increasing importance of stadium naming rights as arterial revenue streams for college programs even while the changes themselves require time to permeate the zeitgeist. Kentucky AD Barnhart admits he still calls Kroger Field by its former name, Commonwealth Stadium. "Everyone loves traditions and I’m a tradition guy…but I also think the most important thing that I can do is provide the resources for our program to have our best chance to be successful in every facet. To do that, you may have to change your thoughts a little bit from time to time." Sports law firm Herrick, Feinstein LLP attorney Kishner asserts that some of the most iconic buildings and stadiums on college campuses throughout the country will soon have sponsored naming rights, explaining there's "too much money; money that can go directly into the programs." For UK, its 15-year, $215M deal with JMI has already paid dividends on both ends. JMI's $29.4M signing bonus has helped fund a large portion of UK's new $49M baseball stadium while JMI's 12-year, $22M naming rights agreement with Kroger has largely offset the firm's signing bonus. Barnhart: "We were looking for some things that changed our financial picture and allowed us to move forward with our master plan of facilities and get our baseball stadium up and running. That has a domino effect and allows us to build a tennis facility next. Tennis will backfill where baseball left." (link)
Latest SBJ: Liz Mullen tops an entire section on the commercial rights of student-athletes now & what they might be with the pending outcome of the Jenkins case. NCAA lead counsel Wilkinson: "I don’t think there’s any dispute here that everyone at the NCAA and the conferences understands that people criticize the NCAA for the rules and whether they should be, you know, prohibiting pay, and all those things. That’s not anything that there’s any dispute about in this case; that everyone, all the defendants are on notice about those issues. This case is about whether there’s an antitrust violation here." Plaintiff attorney Kessler says it would be up to the individual conferences to decide how to handle additional student-athlete compensation, if it comes to that. More Kessler: "If we win this case, there will be a better system for the players, a better system for the schools and a better system for college games. Because what history shows is that more competition is not only fairer, it is more popular and it helps the sport thrive." Lots more, excellent read. (link); Michael Smith pens on Opendorse's ability to help departments spread their message & new UCF leader Whittaker is the first Prez on the system. Opendorse has deals with nearly 30 schools now, including a number of big brands, with clients paying $5K to $30K annually. (link); USC AD Swann in the spotlight, "I inherited a lot of good people. My job is to help them be better managers of what we have. There’ll be some processes we change along the way. […] I’m a financial conservative. I want to be a good fiduciary of [USC]. I came here, we were in good financial shape. The day I leave, I want it to be in better shape than when I found it. I don’t care if you played, coached, owned a football team, if you’ve been an athletic director and the head coach and you’re now the AD. Your job is not to call the plays. You hire someone to call the plays and let that person do the job." A bit more. (link)
Experiencing the World presented by Anthony Travel
ESPN lands the FA Cup for $55M over three years ($18.33M/yr), far more annually than IMG was getting from Fox, which is believed to be around $6M. More programming for ESPN+. (link); The Fox Regional Sports Networks being offloaded by Disney are drawing attention from a number of different suitors with a number of different aims. Sinclair, YouTube, Amazon, plus private equities Blackstone Group, CVC & Apollo are all showing interest according to a Bloomberg report. (link); Also, former Amazon Head of Studios Ball goes deep on how HBO can make more money without sacrificing quality, a key directive in the new WarnerMedia world order. Key note for us, more sports rights are not an ingredient according to Ball. (link, link)

Viewpoints: Former NCAA EVP & new XFL Commish Luck on the latest developments around Ohio State, Maryland & others, "I think it might be a little bit of an inflection point. I don’t think college football is immune from societal influences and pressures. Nothing is." Former UNLV/Arizona/Washington State AD Livengood: "I’m not trying to moralize, but we have been a little captivated by the left and right columns [of the standings] a little bit more than we should have. The old notion that a lot of those things don’t seem to be issues when there’s good marks on the left column is gone." Yahoo's Thamel also gets this from an unnamed DI HC: "You need to keep up with the times of how society is changing and how politically correct everything is. You better have everything buttoned up in every department, or it’s going to catch up to you. You are seeing that whatever was acceptable years ago isn’t as acceptable now." (link); Yahoo's Wetzel goes in on the 2007 quote from Big Ten Commish Delany, "Winning our way requires some discipline and restraint with the recruitment process. Not every athlete fits athletically, academically or socially at every university. Fortunately, we have been able to balance our athletic and academic mission so that we can compete successfully and keep faith with our academic standards." Wetzel: "Those loaded comments were regrettable then. They are ridiculous now. (Although it’s worth noting, it isn’t the players who are causing the major problems these days, it’s the highly paid adults.) The league needs to find its bearings. There are too many good people and good athletes and good fans who deserve and should demand better from their leadership. […] The Big Ten has always at least said it was about more than winning. It still can be, if it really tries." (link); USA Today's Schroeder believes the situations at OSU & UMD should serve as a major wakeup call for all departments to evaluate their programs. (link)
Georgia AD McGarity tabs longtime USC Senior Assoc. AD El Shahawy as his new Deputy AD for Student Development. McGarity: "Magdi [El Shahawy] brings a wealth of experience to the University of Georgia. We are very fortunate to have him leading our efforts in these critical areas of our program." El Shahawy spent the last 18 years with the Trojans after stints at Florida State & Michigan State. (link); In another notable executive-level move, Canisius Assoc. AD/SWA Murphy is the new boss at Daemen (DII). Daeman Prez Olson: "Traci’s broad experience in intercollegiate athletics, commitment to the student-athlete experience, and vision will make her an exceptional leader for our athletics program." (link)
Kansas State FB HC Snyder has a new five-year contract, but the USA Today's Schroeder says there are still plenty of questions around the succession plan in Manhattan. Schroeder: "If the administration had been willing to promote Sean, Bill Snyder might already have retired. But the succession plan appears to be a long shot, which is why tension continues to bubble, just beneath the surface, about what happens when Snyder finally retires. If he ever does. […] But while he deserves credit for building far more than a football program – even though that alone would have been an astonishing accomplishment – Snyder’s desire bordering on insistence of his son as successor potentially holds the school hostage. And as the years pass, Snyder runs the risk of staying too long." (link)
1.Question's Brown corners Clemson Assoc. AD for FB McCorvey before the Tigers kick off. The pair chat on modern recruiting dynamics, student-athlete development & money in the system. McCorvey: "Kids are a lot more educated about the world they're living in because of social media. They have so many things coming their way. […] Once we get these kids, we have to stay in front of the things coming at them as they get older. We want to be able to say at least we've done a good job of educating them about being ready for life." More, 10-minute conversation. (link)
The transition of new Minnesota WBB HC Whalen from WNBA stand-out to collegiate bench leader will be one of the more interesting new HC situations to watch. Gophers AD Coyle notes the experience & abilities of the staff Whalen put together. The squad is currently in Italy, without Whalen of course, though she did get to see two or three of the 10 practices leading up to the tour, "It’s different when you’re going to practice and coaching a practice. That’s a big day. That’s a lot, but I was able to get over there kind of when I could." (link); On the Men's side, what will UMBC do for an encore? Retrievers AD Hall on how he landed in Baltimore & strategically positioned the department, "I was the basketball guy and the fundraiser and that’s what UMBC was looking for. I knew there wasn’t a lot of history and tradition, but there is such an insatiable appetite for college sports and college basketball that I knew it could open windows that had never been opened. We worked very strategically to make happen what happened." UMBC HC Odom: "We’re never going to recreate that moment, but how we can use it to move us forward?" (link)
More Personnel:  Longtime Big Sky Deputy Commish Loghry named interim leader for the league. (link); Colorado State FB HC Bobo taken to the hospital for medical evaluation after experiencing numbness in his feet. (link); ESPN's Sherman details the celebrity status of Nebraska FB HC Frost in Lincoln. Calls him "the reluctant rock star." (link); Iowa State FB HC Campbell is among a small group of HCs who "are eschewing coordinator titles" after not promoting anyone to OC after former OC Manning left in February. Michigan and Washington State are among those without coordinators on the offensive side. Per The Athletic's Olson: "Of 130 FBS teams, all but six have at least one offensive assistant with a coordinator title. Fifty-three FBS programs have two offensive assistants with coordinator titles. Eight programs have three coordinators on offense." (link); Florida AC Stancil named Tulane Swimming & Diving HC. (link); Miami (FL) posts the highest gender pay gap for head coaches in the state of Florida, with male leaders averaging $1.57M compared to female's $239,705. That's a 554.84% difference. Florida State (395.83%), UCF (351.98%), Florida (336.66%) and USF (225.58%) complete the top-five. Data on 64 schools listed here. (link); And in Virginia, Virginia Tech holds the top spot with male HCs outpacing female ones by 390.87% thanks to averages of $1.041M for the men and $212,154 for the women. Rounding out the top-five in the Commonwealth: Virginia (281.09%), VCU (204.86%), Richmond (200.27%) and ODU (138.71%). Forty schools ranked. (link)
Here's a heck of a title from the Wall Street Journal, "How Bosses Waste Their Employees' Time." Two examples: 1) Many bosses don't pay enough attention to followers' needs, behaviors and wants; and, 2) "Cookie licking" = "when leaders of growing companies don’t realize or accept that the time has come to delegate responsibilities." Solutions: A) As a leader, be skeptical when you receive nothing but "sunny feedback," but be careful not to make many off-the-cuff snide remarks that can influence employees; B) Be sure to heap equal praise on employees who lead big initiatives, but also those "who remove destructive friction and waste." (link)

Watch I: New Jackson State AD Robinson expresses his excitement to be home, but more so to positively impact a community with which he is so familiar. Points to building relationships with HCs by sitting down to understand their true needs & "showing them that you care." Sounds like Robinson would like to do a master facilities plan for upgrades to all digs in the next three to five years, starts with all supporters buying season FB tickets & with 50K living alums, Robinson would like to see half purchase. Overall, "It's not about just athletics for me, it's about helping Jackson State as a whole grow." (link)
Watch II: Fairfield AD Schlickmann with his latest "From the Director's Chair" video chat as the Stags are rounding back into action. There's plenty of footage of the new fueling station, which Schlickmann says should help to attract the best & the brightest, as well as provide current student-athletes an optimal experience. Plus, the conversation takes place in the renovated Baseball locker room, which was one of a handful of projects that continued into the summer. Schlickmann: "I think we're scratching the surface. We still have a lot of work to do, but it's fun to see all the pieces come to fruition." More. (link)

Grand Canyon launches its new 'In the Heart of Phoenix' marketing campaign designed to profile "what is being accomplished at GCU with a bustling university situated in the heart of Phoenix, successful teams earning their way into the hearts of Phoenicians and a student body's heart to serve the community." TV spots, radio, billboards & community engagement opportunities are all part of the mix. Three pillars: Phoenix, fans & facilities. 30-second hype video leverages, "Feel the Thunder in the Heart of Phoenix." (link)
More Facility Updates: The east side of Youngstown State's Stambaugh Stadium will be closed this season due to construction of a new pressbox. (link); Miami (FL) received the certificate of occupancy for the Carol Soffer Indoor Practice Facility last week and after the turf is completed the Canes should be in there in the next few days. (link); The status of any future improvements to the Wake Forest Tennis Complex is "up in the air" as money is pointed to as the looming factor. Shade is the biggest need. (link); Former Vanderbilt OL Townsend: "Those (football) facilities look like we only want to exist, not win." The last major stadium renovation in Nashville... 1981 for $10.1M. South Carolina's Williams-Brice received $33M work in 2006, marking the second-oldest renovation in the league. More here on the Vandy situation and a breakdown of all SEC stadium upgrades. (link); The "Home of the 12th Man" lettering along the third deck of the east facade at Texas A&M's Kyle Field is getting an upgrade so the font will match the lettering in the rest of the venue. New video ribbon board also being installed, all will be ready in time for first kick Aug. 30. (link)
