BAHAMAS MARINE MAMMAL RESEARCH ORGANISATION

E-NEWS August 2018

Dear friends and supporters of BMMRO,

Firstly let us share the exciting news of the well known manatee, Gina, having yet another calf here in the Bahamas, whose name has been picked and voted for by the public and is now called, Calypso! Since our last newsletter we collaborated with scientists from the University of Aarhus conducting an acoustic research project on dwarf sperm whales using a very long and heavy vertical array to record the animals vocalisations, and as part of our 'Shared Waters' project we retrieved one of our arrays temporarily to download the data. You can read about the retrieval from one of our kind volunteers that day, here. We have also seen lots of sperm whales, bottlenose dolphins, dwarf sperm whales, both Atlantic and pan-tropical spotted dolphins, and beaked whales! Finally, we ran a very successful and inspiring poster competition among local schools in collaboration with Dolphin Encounters.

Top: Gina and Calypso; bottom left: Randy with a severe prop cut, but still seen feeding, and bottom right: Ashley-Davis with multiple scratches that seemed to heal while many volunteers diligently monitored him; thank you especially to Mike and Norma.
Left: Pulling in 500m cable every evening with our Danish colleagues and right: the array in all it's glory.
A happy team having found and successfully retrieved our acoustic array from 100 feet. Thank you to Kim Rody, the Probsts' and Marc Kopp!
Above the winning posters from each grade; absolutely wonderful!
