President Kenyatta, make the manufacturing agenda a gift to the youth

Some of us who experienced the presidency of Mwai Kibaki as teenagers will remember him for making university education accessible to us. Today, there are more graduates in Kenya because Kibaki made it his business to expand higher education.

However, as the number of Universities, middle level and technical institutions increased the number of jobless youth increased in a similar proportion. Today, Kenya has the highest number of Jobless youth in East Africa region. Some of my peers whom I graduated with in 2015, have never found any meaningful employment for instance. This is dangerous; selling hope to youth then delivering despair.

The youth of Kenya are increasingly becoming angry and forlorn. As time goes by they are convinced that the system is not designed for them. Nothing buttresses this point like the presidential appointments which always prove that the public service is either a recycler of incompetent individuals, a dustbin of retirees or worst still a tool for the president to exercise patronage and clientelism.

Numbers don’t lie, A National Manpower Survey report released in 2014 revealed that young people between the age of 18-29 consisted only a paltry 25% in the public service.

In 2013, President Uhuru Kenyatta campaigned on the platform of youthfulness. His message and style gave some of us ‘first time voters’ hope and the possibility of shaking things up. So far, he’s done nothing on this front and risks denting his legacy. As he prioritizes on his four main agendas during his last term, he needs to ponder on what he wants the youth to remember him for.

Manufacturing which is one of the main four agendas of President Kenyatta, can be a silver bullet to the problem of unemployment. All nations which are developed today can credit manufacturing as the major catalyst of development and economic stability.

First, a good starting point is by trying to harmonize the technical institute education with the manufacturing agenda. Technical institutes are well spread in Kenya but their potential is yet to be tapped.

MPs trade accusations following public rage over bribery allegations on the sugar saga

Members of Parliament are out for each other's throats with majority who shot down the report on sugar saying it was a shoddy job and that there was possible influence from the sugar barons. Meanwhile those in the Trade Committee blame the House leadership (Majority and Minority Leaders) of misleading the House after MPs refused to adopt the report.

The report recommends the Treasury CS, Former Industry, Trade and Cooperatives CS, and former Agriculture PS, be held accountable. Of issue here was excess importation of sugar and subsequent tax evasion; failure to undertake market surveillance to guarantee quality and safety and to waiver duty for the 14 companies given licence to import the sugar into the country.

National Assembly Leader of Majority questioned the logic to hold the CSs accountable arguing they were acting on an executive order by the President following the prolonged drought. He further accused the joint committee of failing to establish if the sugar was contaminated. His minority counterpart also rejected the report on grounds that the report failed to deal with the real issues - whether the sugar was contaminated with mercury or not.

Meanwhile the public appears helpless as MPs accuse one another of taking bribes to either doctor a report that favors the sugar cartels or getting bribes to shoot down the report.

IEBC Commissioners did not resign; not officially - High Court

The High Court has dismissed a case seeking to declare IEBC unconstitutional over its current composition after three commissioners resigned. Justice Wilfrida Okwany said there was no evidence the commissioners who resigned submitted written notices to the President. He further stated that the President had not published a gazette notice declaring vacancies at the IEBC.

Quote of the Week

"Let's not dwell too much on the Sh10,000 bribery. It's not the first time. People (MPs) have been taking bribes even in the toilet...when MPs for EALA were being nominated, people (MPs) got paid [to vote for them]...bribery began a long time ago..."

Quote by Nyali MP, Mohammed Ali (translated from Kiswahili)while responding to media reports about MPs who allegedly took Sh10,000 bribe to reject the sugar report.  He made this statement on August 14, 2018

Lest we forget

"We just heard that Zambian MPs are in Kenya to learn how to fight corruption in their country. Maybe there is something good they are doing here that we do not know about."
