CSDI NEWS AND EVENTS
Message from CSDI

Greetings students,

I would like to welcome you to a new academic year at Georgia Tech. The mission of the Center for Student Diversity and Inclusion is to provide programmatic and thought leadership, expertise, and advocacy to continue to promote the Institute’s diverse student initiatives, programs, and efforts that facilitate our collective goal of student diversity and inclusion.

For our new students, I look forward to meeting you as you engage with the CSDI programs, events, and initiatives, including the Edge peer mentoring program for first-year students.

Returning students, please continue to reach out to the CSDI team and connect your peers with our various resources housed in the Chapin Building and across campus, such as Academic Support, the African-American Male Initiative, and the Center for the Study of Women, Science, and Technology (WST) programs.

We look forward to seeing everyone at our upcoming events on August 23: the Office of Hispanic Initiative’s Latino Welcome Celebration and OMED: Educational Services’ Carnival.

In the year ahead, two exciting events and initiatives will launch through the CSDI: the inaugural Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture and Impact Learning Community. In October, we will host a renowned thought leader as the Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture keynote speaker who will spotlight the contributions of Hispanics/Latinos in society.

Additionally, we will launch the application period for the Impact Learning Community this academic year, and up to 120 students and 15 peer leaders will live in and build connections through the Impact Learning Community during the 2019-20 academic year. The Impact Learning Community is open to all first-year students who are interested in exploring issues of diversity, community engagement, and sustainability. Stay tuned for more information about the Hispanic Heritage Month Lecture and Impact Learning Community application period in the coming months.

Stay informed of updates, campus news, events, and opportunities by reading this and future CSDI Current newsletters.

Let me know if there is anything you need from CSDI to best support your success this year.

Gordon

Diversity and Inclusion Fellows Project Spotlight

Sheila Cranman (right), senior attorney for Legal Affairs and one of this year's Diversity and Inclusion Fellows, recently facilitated conflict resolution sessions for graduate students in science who work in labs, and the sessions are being institutionalized. In spring 2019, three conflict resolution sessions will be offered to the School of Chemistry and Biochemistry through CHEM 8002.

With support from Institute Diversity, the Diversity and Inclusion Fellows Program was launched last year to bring together faculty, staff, and students who individually and collectively advance their action, research, or teaching objectives while improving inclusivity on campus.
