Ngā mihi a koutou kātoa te whānau whānui o te Kura Pokapu o Whakatū–
Greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School.

Welcome this week to Isla, Ethan, Gemma, Blake and Frankie (R12a), Tyne ( 13),  Lesly (R7) and Valentin (R4), and we farewell Tyriece, Kritim and Jayesky who have moved houses and schools.

Our school roll now sits at 494 and includes 98 students learning in Māori medium.

Our increasing roll numbers have , as you know, triggered an enrolment scheme, and this trend looks like continuing into the near future.

We have  a building programme  in process, that will deliver a 2 classroom space by the end of term one next year. It has been exciting developing the design - that includes break out spaces and a new toilet area.

See the noticeboard for a sneak peak at the plans.
This follows upgrades to our office area, and we hope will lead into Ministry upgrades of our existing buildings.

An increase in roll also means an increase in traffic outside the school - particularly on wet days.

There are concerns around safety of children during pick up time.

Please walk from a bit further or wait until you are parked before picking up your child.

Thank you.

I am looking forward to hearing from our wonderful band, choir and Tamariki toa on at the NCMA towards the end of this month, and then Bandquest on the 31st.  See below for further information.

I will see you there!

As you read this, NZEI members will be striking to raise awareness of the need to recruit and retain excellent teachers for our tamariki. We are aware of the challenges this places on families and greatly appreciate your support.
Teachers and supporters from all over Nelson are meeting at the Church Steps at midday today Wednesday.  If you would like to join in you would be very welcome.

Ngā mihi

Pip

Kowhai News
As the weather is beginning to warm up we are looking forward to being able to use the grass area of the Sensory Garden to extend our outdoor play activities. Research has identified many positive effects of outdoor play including:
1. Learning new information and skills in a fun way, whilst helping children to see learning as an ongoing process instead of just something done in the classroom.

2. Developing  children’s creativity. Being outside children’s imaginations are stimulated by the objects around them and they quickly tap into their creativity.
3. Children are often more active when outside, helping them to build strong bones and good fitness levels, whilst also burning off extra energy and calories.
4. A less crowded outdoor environment children are often  more willing to join in games and activities and more likely to talk to different children and make new friends. This encourages the development of children’s social skills and their ability to interact with other children away from adult supervision.
5.  Being outside means children naturally get vitamin D, which is known to improve moods and create a positive mental attitude. Outdoor play also encourages children to get rid of built up energy, particularly if they tend to be fidgety when sitting inside. This results in them becoming calmer and more focused when in the classroom.
6. The large space in which to play means that when outside children are often away from direct adult supervision. Children learn how to take turns playing games, to pick themselves up then they fall, and how to negotiate unfamiliar equipment. This encourages  children to be independent and self-reliant.
 7. Outdoor play equipment can help children to learn to push their boundaries and become good at risk assessment. It also teaches them to explore new games and become confident in learning to try new things without being guided by adults.
Take a look at the creativity, collaboration and fun going on outside during Kowhai play based learning last Thursday.

Pohutukawa News

Our Inquiry topic this term is "Busy Bodies" and we have been learning all about the different body systems.
Joanna's dad, Robbie Blankenstein, kindly came to our Syndicate Assembly to talk to us about his job with St John's.  We learnt a lot about our heart, what happens when we exercise and how we can stay healthy.  We also saw some of the machines in action.  It was a great presentation.  Thank you!
Room 9 are learning how to structure an information report.  We shared our ideas about the learning we have done on the skeletal system, putting together this shared piece of writing.

The Human Skeleton
Information Report by Room 9

The skeleton is a layer of bones under the skin, that protect our organs.

There are 206 bones in your body.  Bones are strong but they can get broken.  The biggest bone is the thigh bone and the smallest bone is in the ear, called the stirup.  Each hand has 27 bones.  Spongy bones are found at the end of long bones.

Without skeletons we wouldn’t be able to do anything!

As we continue to explore the human body, we have enjoyed stripping back the layers to reveal what is underneath the skin to make the different body systems work.
Remember that this week on Thursday evening we have the "Big Kids' Guide to Growing Up" from 7pm in the library. We look forward to having year 5 and 6 students and parents come along to introduce this learning. Come along for a chance to win movie vouchers!

Ngā Karere o Te Pouahi

Haerenga ki Te Aratoi o Whakatū,
Te Pouahi 16 and 17 visited the Suter Art Gallery on Monday.  We went to see and learn about Ngā Hau Ngākau - Stories of the Birds of our Land exhibition.  We thoroughly enjoyed looking at the finer details of the paintings by Robin Slow and the carvings by Brian Flintoff. We learnt about Manaia patterns and we looked deeper into one of the artworks that portrayed Parihaka.  The tamariki enjoyed drawing native birds that depicted special people in their lives.  Using pastel colours on black paper, some of the artworks were truly outstanding!  A huge mihi to Whāea Esther for sharing all her knowledge about the artworks with us.
School Community Group

The Nelson Central School Community group had their AGM on the 7th August, where they reflected on the successes of the past year and their efforts to enable funding for extra school activities and needs.
In the past 12 months they have helped organise and fundraise for :
The Sensory Garden, School Calendars, Two School Discos, The Rogaine family race and School Gala, our Community Picnic, Fundraising for Camps, Kapa Haka and Cultural events.
Sunblock fundraising and Raffles.
The Community group would like to thank all the Staff at the School, Pip Wells and all of the parents and family members who have helped to ensure that these events have been a success.

We truly can not do this without all your help.

Please pencil in the following dates for upcoming events in the next month:

30th August the Central School Choir will be performing at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts in collaboration with Pics Peanut Butter. This will be a fun event for the whole community.
- Please see the office for details.
Also on sale will be a small Green baby Peanut USB stick with album loaded on to it. This is a unique gift idea for Fathers day, Grandparents or gifts for Family and Friends.

The Annual Nelson Crank MTB event will be held on September the 16th. * Rain date will be the following weekend on the 23rd *.
This event is another great day for the whole family, and we are very keen for help with this event, as it was such a great success last year.
Please contact the Community group or leave details at the office if you are able to help.

Thank you again for a successful year of fundraising. It all helps our Children and Mokopuna to have a varied and full education at Nelson Central School.

Regards
