Resurrection Voices

Adult Christian Education Opportunity
Beginning Sunday, September 16 at 10:15 a.m.

Throughout Scripture, God’s people are called to study his word. To encourage such reading and study, I’ve placed The Word for Your Week in the bulletin insert throughout the summer. You will continue to find it there each Sunday and in the online newsletter as well. I hope that you find it to be a helpful source for your private devotional time.

God’s people are also called to spend time in his word with others.  Conversation and discussion, questions and “I wonders…” bring richer, deeper meaning to faith centered learning. Plus, it’s fun!  Beginning on Sunday, September 16, please join us in the Fellowship Hall at 10:15. We’ll share coffee and a conversation about God’s word.  NO EXPERIENCE IS NECESSARY! Whether you read your Bible regularly and have participated in Bible study for many years OR you don’t even know where your Bible is, YOU ARE WELCOME!

We’ll attempt to keep our sessions “drop in friendly.” We encourage regular attendance but understand that sometimes schedules don’t allow for it. Please know that if you’ve missed sessions, you’re always welcome to attend.

The schedule hasn’t yet been cast in stone, but the following are plans for the Fall:

September Lay Ministry Sign Up

The Sign Up Genius self sign up for Lay Ministry is working great.  A lot of the assignments are being filled this way and it results in far fewer schedule conflicts.  Any openings that are not selected are still assigned as in the past.  If you know you have a conflict for particular dates, let the office know so you are not scheduled.

To take advantage of this new method, click on the link below to sign up for Lay Ministry slots in September.

Bible Distribution

Attention third grade students and parents.  On September 9th, we will distribute bibles to parents of third graders.  We ask parents to highlight favorite or meaningful verses.  On September 23rd, parents should bring the bible to church where they will present it to their child during worship.  Please be sure to register your child for Sunday school so we can ensure we have a bible for each third grader

Bring your backpack to the 9:00 am service on September 9th and receive a special blessing for the school year.
If you’re a student or teacher heading back to school, you’re invited to bring your backpack to worship on September 9. During the children’s message, Pastor Kim will offer a blessing on it, praying for a successful school year of learning and new experiences. Students of ALL AGES are welcome to get their backpacks blessed.
Sunday school will be starting soon! The official start of Sunday school is on September 9, 2018!  Lots of preparation is under way to make this a successful year.  We currently have nine teachers signed up and only need three more for the 1st – 2nd grade group for this year.  We will have four teachers for each grade group.  There is a teacher orientation on August 19, 2018 at 10:15 am or August 29, 2018 at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall.

Each grade group (3K - 5K, 1st - 2nd grade, 3rd - 4th grade) will have a dedicated team of teachers for the year.  During the year, all children will have the opportunity to participate in learning scripture, music, a Christmas program, and a service project in the spring.

In addition, we will have opportunities to volunteer in the service project activity, and/or the Christmas program.  Please contact Christine Piper   cpiper79@wi.rr.com) or Shawn Motley (shawn.motley11@gmail.com), Sunday school coordinators with any questions.
Thank you,
Christine Piper & Shawn Motley
Help set up for Family Promise

On Sunday, Aug. 19, we will be preparing once again to host Family Promise guests. Family Promise is a program that provides shelter and meals to homeless families in Waukesha County. During the week of the 19th, families will be sleeping in our Sunday school rooms and eating most of their meals in our church.
We need help preparing for them! Could you spare 30 minutes after the 9 a.m. church service to help us set up cots and make our church as welcoming as possible for the families? Many hands make light the work. If you can help, just talk to Beth Earnest after the service.
Outreach for Hope Family Bike Ride – Sept. 8, 2018

Outreach for Hope's mission is to inspire giving to support Greater Milwaukee Synod ministries that provide hope to those living in poverty. These ministries, supported by the Family Bike Ride, enrich the lives of thousands in the Greater Milwaukee Synod area.  The impact is transformative – here are a few ways your support makes a difference:
7 medical clinics or parish nurses are possible
16 summer youth programs are supported
13 food pantries are available
15 after school tutoring programs
7,800 meals and food bags (weekly)
6,000 people weekly are welcomed at congregations receiving OFH funding

Registration is now open at ofhbikeride.com. Generous Action Grants will provide an additional $20 for each registered rider, virtual rider or volunteer AND an additional $10 for every donation raised. Visit the website to learn more about how you can help us reach this year’s goal of $120,000 to support Outreach for Hope ministries.

Be sure to register by 8/20 to receive a Ride T-shirt, and by 9/5 to avoid increased fees. All ages and abilities are welcome to participate.

You’ll be a Champion of Hope when you participate in the Outreach for Hope Family Bike on Sept. 8th.  Choose from two ride locations, each offering beautiful scenery along a well-maintained trail. Join friends and family on the Glacial Drumlin Trail in Dousman/Waukesha County, or the Interurban Trail in Grafton/Ozaukee County. Enjoy the fun, food, and fellowship as you pedal for a great cause.

See you on Sept. 8 as we pedal together to support life-giving ministries!

The Word for Your Week…
The questions relate to the highlighted passage for the day.

Sunday, August 12:     1 Kings 19:4-8        Ephesians 4:25-5:2    John 6:35, 41-51
Jesus’ words about himself are puzzling. What does it mean that Jesus is the living bread from heaven? How does eating the bread who is Jesus keep us alive forever? What questions do you have about this passage?

Monday, August 13:     Psalm 57         2 Samuel 15:13-31        Ephesians 5:1-14
What sorts of “empty words” are you easily deceived by? What does it mean to live as a “child of the light?” How do the admonitions in this passage affect the way you live each day?

Tuesday, August 14:     Psalm 57         2 Samuel 18:19-33        2 Peter 3:1-13
This passage speaks of Jesus’ return to earth in the last days. Does Jesus’ promised return bring you fear or hope? Why?

Wednesday, August 15:     Psalm 57        2 Samuel 19:1-18         John 6:35-40
During a time of danger and difficulty, the psalmist remains confident in God, singing, “God will send forth his steadfast love and his faithfulness.” When you are going through a tough time, do you continue to be confident in God and his promises? Why or why not? How might your faith be strengthened during difficult times?

Thursday, August 16:     Psalm 111         1 Kings 1:1-30        Acts 6:8-15
In this passage, Stephen did great wonders and signs among the people and spoke with wisdom and the Spirit. Instead of rejoicing in God’s work through Stephen, his hearers were angry and felt threatened, so they stirred up the people against him, using false witnesses. Have you ever heard new thoughts/ideas which challenged your old ways of thinking? Did you welcome these ideas or were you reluctant to accept them? How did you feel about the one who presented these challenging ideas to you?

Friday, August 17:     Psalm 111        1 Kings 1:28-48         Romans 16:17-20
We don’t like to acknowledge it, but the truth is that there are people who thrive on offenses and dissension, and so create them wherever they can. How can you recognize such opposition to Christ’s work and will? How might you stop such dissension before it spreads and causes all kinds of evil outcomes?

Saturday, August 18:     Psalm 111         1 Kings 2:1-4             John 4:7-26
While on his death bed, King David gives advice to his heir to the throne—his son Solomon. How can David’s advice to his son be a model for your life? If you are a parent, how can David’s words model to the advice you give your children.
