August, 2018

Dear <<First Name>>,

Woah!  What just happened?  One minute I’m watching the fireworks in celebration of the 4th in our quirky New England town of Marblehead, MA, and the next minute I’m looking at the August calendar reflecting back on our vacation -- the joy of communal living with my sister’s and my families (all 11 of us) along Lake Michigan, then time with some fabulous high school friends outside of Detroit.

I once heard someone describe a vacation as three trips:
1.    Anticipation of and planning for
2.    The actual vacation
3.    Re-entry and the memories
It’s the gift that keeps on giving, apparently, and reminds me to appreciate the restorative benefits of taking time away from the “day job.”

Breaking from routine is when new ideas percolate.
When you’re not running at full throttle to deliver on commitments, make your numbers, and keep your boss and team happy, there’s room to see and hear things differently.  And, when your back to work, carving out time to lift your head up to better understand what your team needs and expects from you offers immense benefits.

How do I do that, you ask?  Read on for how to solicit and embrace feedback as the Ultimate Leadership Advantage.

Cheers!

The notion of perfection is a fallacy, especially when it comes to leadership.  The most effective leaders are those willing to look in the mirror, embrace their blind spots and modify that which is not working well for them or others.  Like an athlete at the top of her game, there is always opportunity to improve.

While conducting a personal SWOT analysis helps you self-assess your leadership capabilities, soliciting and listening to feedback from your team is a powerful tool for rounding out your perspective and taking your game up a notch.

Your team members can offer unique insights about how your communication style and decision making approach is helping or hindering their productivity, satisfaction and team alignment. While it can be uncomfortable, seeking and being open to feedback can differentiate you as a leader, especially if team members see you making a concerted effort to embrace their ideas and suggestions.

For those courageous enough to give it a try, heed these reminders to ensure you’re leveraging the power of feedback.

The Perfectionist's Handbook, Jeff Szymanski

Does perfectionism get in your way?  This handbook is an excellent resource to help you assess to what degree perfectionism is hindering your performance (and happiness) and offers strategies for minimizing those behaviors that get in your way.  One of the techniques explored by the author is (not surprisingly) the power of inviting feedback.
