Touch A Tractor
NCSPA held our 3rd annual Touch a Tractor event in North Hills on August 7th. It was a hot day but all of the kids braved the heat to learn about ag and of course climb on some cool tractors and a simulator! The association holds this event each year to help reach the great urban community and show them the different aspects of agricultural life. This year NC Small Grains, NC Sweet Potatoes, NC Beef Council, Wake County Farm Bureau, Quality Equipment and B&S Equipment all came to lend a hand. You can see all the pictures from the day through the link here.
Summer Field Days a Success
Two of the state’s largest field days were held over the last few weeks and both were great successes. The Northeast Ag Expo was held on July 26 and drew several hundred farmers to NC Spuds/Perdue Farms in Elizabeth City and the Blackland Farm Managers Tour was held on August 1 at 3B and Foxfire Farms in Pinetown. There is definitely the opportunity for significant yield increases in NC soybeans if we change how we think about and manage the crop so we were excited to see so many great presentations.
Field days are some of our favorite events as they provide a wonderful opportunity to network with farmers and agribusiness leaders from across the state as well as simply catch up with old friends.
There is more field day fun to be had this year so don’t miss the following upcoming events:
Aug 23: Forsyth, Surry, Yadkin Soybean Field Day
Aug 28: Johnston County Soybean Field Day
Sept 6: Wake County Soybean Field Day
Sept 19: Bertie County Field Tour
Oct 3: Piedmont Soybean Field Day, Salisbury, NC

Leadership at Its Best Begins in Raleigh
Soybean farmer-leaders from 12 states met this week in Raleigh, N.C., for Part I of the 2018-19 ASA Leadership At Its Best program, sponsored by Syngenta. NCSPA Director Angela Berben was among the 12 selected to participate in this valuable program.  The program recognizes up-and-coming soybean farmer-leaders and provides them with extensive training to further develop their leadership skills and provide additional education on communications, strategic planning, forecasting, media training and overall effective leadership practices. Continue here to see how their week went!
National Ag Leaders Roundtable
Friday, August 3rd, leaders from across NC and the country gathered to discuss the future of agriculture on a national scale. The conversation was organized by Congressman David Rouzer and Senator Thom Tillis in light of the recent nuisance lawsuits that are targeting eastern NC hog farmers. The roundtable was held at the NC State Fairgrounds in the Martin Building, and with a crowd of 1,000 farmers, the overflow watched from the Scott Building.
Six NCSPA directors made the trip to Raleigh that day to show their support on the issue. NC’s American Soybean Association representative was one among the many national commodity leaders invited to be a part of the conversation.
Overall, it was an inspiring and uplifting day spent hearing from ag leaders from the state and across the nation. Some of the panelist traveled halfway across the country to stand strong with our farmers and livestock producers. The group later held a press conference answering questions on the lawsuits and agricultural practices here in NC, setting the record straight. Commissioner Troxler summed up the meeting best when he said, “We can feed the world, but we have to be on the farm to do it.” Continue here to see the full video of the panel and to see the list of panelist.
USDA to Assist Farmers Impacted by Tariffs
U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue has announced that the USDA will be making efforts to assist farmers who have been affected by the recent tariffs imposed by China. The strategy will allow USDA to authorize up to $12 billion in programs to assist growers with the negative impact felt from disrupted markets. The program will be implemented in three parts: Market Facilitation Program, Food Purchase and Distribution Program, Trade Promotion ProgramContinue here to read more about the programs and how they will help assist farmers.
