Edition Twelve 2018
10 August 2018

It has been a busy couple of weeks to the start of Term 3, with staff and students hitting the ground running.  I have been impressed with the work ethic and focus of our charges following a solid three week holiday break.  It is hoped this extended time for rest and recuperation permits improved productivity and performance from all members of our community.  The School feels like it has its soul back now the students have returned!

Last week I challenged the students to think beyond themselves and set goals that will allow them to personally enhance and support the community in which they live.  Therefore, I would like to commend those students who participated in the Anglicare Sleepout recently, in support of those who are homeless. These students lived and experienced just a tiny bit of what these members of our community go through every single day which helps to produce empathy and sow the seed to enact positive change.  Thank you to Mrs McCann for organising this experience.

A couple of highlights of my week that I would like to make note of.  Firstly, the Drama Production: such an amazing event!  To think this was written by our very own Drama teacher, Mr Robertson, suggests why this aspect of the school is in such good hands.  The student’s commitment and effort resulted in three wonderful evenings of entertainment, all full houses.  Congratulations to all involved.

The Cast of the Most Horrid Child of All

Secondly, I had the privilege of attending the Meta Design Art Awards Exhibition held at Gallery Central, North Metropolitan TAFE, where three of our students’ work was on display.  Well done to Syuen Jing Lee, Georgia Grubelich and Aimee Olofsson.  Syuen earned a commendation for her work.  I am forever amazed at the incredible talent young people have and the willingness to bare their soul through their chosen medium.  All three girls should be so proud, because we are.

Finally, I have to say what a pleasure it has been meeting students and their families, both in class and out, and getting your impressions of St George’s.  There is so much to be thankful for.  The Parent Interviews came at such a perfect time for me to meet many of you on an informal basis and I thank you all for your warm welcome and candidness in terms of your feedback.  I look forward to sharing more of the direction and vision of our school with parents at the upcoming Principals Breakfast on Friday 17 August.

Blessings to all.

FOR CATERING PURPOSES PLEASE RSVP BEFORE 9.00am ON MONDAY 13 AUGUST

WACE Examination Timetables
The 2018 WACE Practical and Written Examination Timetables are now available and can be viewed here. Students will be given individual timetables later in the term.

Year 12 End of Semester Exams
This week the Year 12 students received their End of Semester exam timetable. These exams commence on Monday 1 October which is the second week of the school holidays.  A copy of the exam timetable can be found under the Documents tab on SEQTA Engage.  These exams are the final formal assessment students will sit at St George’s before their WACE and WAUFP exams begin.
One of the things that reduces anxiety for students is developing a level of organisation that enables them to properly manage their time.  Developing good organisational habits early in life can alleviate years of stress.  I know without to-do lists and my calendar, I would struggle.

Every student at St George’s is issued with a diary at the start of the year to assist them in tracking their homework, tests and assignments.  By using their diary regularly, students are less likely to become overwhelmed by the volume of work they have and less likely to miss homework or assessments.

Parents can help with this by regularly checking their child’s diary to ensure they are being used.  TAG teachers will support parent efforts by also checking student diaries regularly.  Diaries also offer an easy way for parents to communicate with classroom teachers or the TAG teacher.

Another way that students can stay organised is to plan longer assignments and study for tests or exams using a calendar, where they can map out their study over a longer period of time.  A wall calendar or School Planner placed next to your child’s study area can help them visually keep track of their school work.

Small things like this can help to reduce pressure and enable our students to think clearly and not become overwhelmed.  With significant research supporting the concept that happy kids are successful kids, the reduction of anxiety by simple measures becomes something we should all be encouraging.
  From the SCIENCE DEPARTMENT
National Science week commences next week and we will be challenging our students to #findtheirscience and help celebrate and recognise the importance of Science in their daily life.

Lunchtime demonstrations, interactive displays and the annual Science Week quiz will offer students a chance to engage, learn and even win some great prizes. Check the SEQTA notices daily to find out how you can get involved.

As a part of Science Week we have been offered the following opportunity for all girls in Year 10 – 12: The Innovators’ Tea Party is a free speed-networking event for female students in Years 10 – 12 who are interested in careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). The event will be attended by 100 Women in STEM Mentors who are all passionate about their fields and sharing their career stories. There are 8 x 90 minute speed-networking sessions to choose from across two Saturdays during National Science Week (August 11 and 18).  This is a great opportunity for students to learn about STEM careers and be mentored by industry professionals at a convenient location in our CBD.  Visit the website to learn more and register your place:

If you are interested in attending this event, please see Miss Donovan or register yourself and a friend on the website provided.

YEAR 8: LIVE & EXPLOSIVE SHOW at MURDOCH UNIVERSITY
The Year 8 students visited Murdoch University to watch the Live and Explosive show that was presented by the Science and Engineering departments at the university. Here are a some things that a few of the students had to say about the day:

We really enjoyed going to Murdoch Uni.  We saw the Live and Explosive science show, which was about chemistry and explosions. There was a giant finale where there was a blow-up shark who helped to create a tremendous amount of C02 gas using liquid nitrogen.  Overall, we really enjoyed the show and hope we will be able to go again.
Charles, Hamish and Michael B

Today the Year 8 class and I went to Murdoch university to watch a great show.  I really liked that we had this experience in our school life.  I think this is because we learnt a lot of things that can used in our work, both at home and at school.  Thank you Mr Lim and Ms Carrick for taking all of us out today.
Harry Maude

Today we visited Murdoch university to participate in the Live and Explosive show.  We enjoyed the excursion as it was super fun to watch even though it was meant to be educational.  It was good that we could apply the content we learned last term into real life.  The show was fun, and it was nice that the students were able to help out and participate which made it more engaging to watch.  I would definitely recommend it to the Year 8 students next year.
From Saira, Brianna and Kailyn

I found this show to be both interesting and enjoyable.  I loved how they jumped right into the experiments straight away and remembered to explain the science behind what was happening in a way all ages and abilities could understand.  It was great to see some of the concepts that have been explained to us in our science classes in action.  I greatly enjoyed the live explosives show at Murdoch University and recommend it to anyone looking to explore chemistry in an entertaining way.

I’d like to thank Murdoch University for putting on a great experience for the students. I’d also like to thank the students for fantastic behavior, and Ms Carrick for volunteering to join us on the day.

YEAR 12 BIOLOGY & PSYCHOLOGY PERTH ZOO
The Year 12 Biology ATAR class went on an excursion to Perth Zoo to help our studies understand homeostasis.  It was a cold, wet day that didn’t accurately represent the excitement and joy felt by the class.  On the trip, we met one of the zoo’s most experienced keepers and looked at how animals control their internal body temperatures when subject to different external environments, specifically we looked at how penguins manage to do that during different seasons throughout the year. It was a brilliant experience which involved touching and interacting with animals in their enclosures and I think I speak on behalf of the class when I say it was very helpful.  I’d like to thank Mr Quan for taking us on the excursion and allowing us to have a hands-on experience.
Trent Foo

The Year 12 Psychology and Biology ATAR students took part in an excursion to Perth Zoo.  It was a cold and wet day, however a fantastically enjoyable day as we were able to explore the zoo and learn about its inner workings.

It allowed the Psychology class to gain an insight on the different types of conditioning  that exists and the practical application of these on a day to day basis in the zoo.

We listened to fantastic talks on how different animals are trained at the zoo and the many purposes these programs hold.  From the rhino to the numbat, the zoo uses these programs to allow for safe research and conservation of these precious species.

It was completely engaging and allowed us to see the practical application of psychology theory.

The excursion to the zoo was truly a fantastic opportunity for both classes to learn about the programs offered and the many different careers that exist because of these programs. It allowed us to apply our knowledge of different types of training to amazing real-world scenarios.

It was a great learning experience and a fantastic day!

Jackson Edmonds

What instrument(s) do you play?
I play piano, drums, bass, guitar and harmonica.  I can use Ableton and have a Launchpad MKII.

What first got you interested in Music?
My grandma.  She had a piano, her stepmum’s piano, I played it when I was younger and eventually got lessons.  Also, my dad is in a band playing drums and my mum plays violin.

What's the best thing about Music at St. G’s?
Just being able to pick up anything I guess.  Everyone comes at recess and plays because all instruments are available.

Why should other people do music?
Because I think it’s fun.  I like listening to music and sound.  There is also the side which improves mental capacity.

What's your advice for anyone learning Music?
Don’t give up. Try your best.  In 20 years you’ll look back and be like ‘wow.’
