Alaska Developers Alliance

Hey Developer Community!

Event #2 was a success! We're still working out some kinks and as always feed back is welcome.

Thank you to Adam and Jeff for presenting. If you missed the presentation, you can find it on Facebook
If you were able to attend, please fill out the feedback survey so Jeff and Adam can continue to improve their speaking skills.

Event #3

Summer is moving quickly and our next event is coming up soon. Mike Edgington will be giving a talk on speech recognition and language processing. Please fill out this survey at the bottom and let us know what dates you're available.

Community Updates

Slack!
Many of you have asked about a central place to communicate. We've finally got our own slack space at https://akdevalliance.slack.com/.

You'll notice a few specific channels when you join - #Anchorage, #Fairbanks, #Juneau, #Dev-Jobs, and #Meetups. In an effort to be more connected with the greater developer community we've created this slack in coordination with the Fairbanks Developer Group. This is a first step and we've got more opportunities coming soon.

#Dev-Jobs will be used for developers looking for work and also for companies to recruit. If you hear of a job, feel free to post it in this channel.

#Meetups will be used to discuss topics and announce events coming up. If you have an interest or an idea for a talk let us know in the channel.

Sponsor the Developer Alliance!

Our goal is to raise $10,000. This will set up the Developer Alliance Scholarship Fund, sponsor AK Dev Alliance gear for members and speakers, and give us the opportunity to bring up an outside guest to speak for the group.

Company sponsorship levels include:
  • Rockstar - $10,000
  • Partner - $5,000
  • Platinum - $2,500
  • Gold - $1,500
  • Bronze - $1,000
  • silver - $500
For more information on what sponsorships could provide for your company, please contact Jeff Levin - jeff@levinology.com

Developer Alliance Scholarship Fund

We're starting a scholarship fund! Many of the developers that attend our meetings are new to the scene or are self-employed. Unfortunately this means that the barrier for them to attend conferences is greater than someone who has company backing. A portion of all Developer Alliance Funds will be used to send those developers to conferences. Our only requirement is that you give a talk and share what you've learned with the rest of the group.

If you've got another idea for how this fund could help the community, please let us know.

End of Summer Camp

Lastly, our big goal for this summer is to get a tech track added to the professional development weekend at https://endofsummer.camp.

"The 2018 End of Summer Camp is a 3-day retreat in an intimate environment for Alaska’s innovators, pioneers, and future leaders. It is a fun-filled, unpretentious retreat focused on expert-level workshops, building and strengthening relationships across industries, exploring new activities, and weaving together the fabric for a stronger and more resilient future for the State of Alaska.

This year, we will guide you through 3 life focuses: Healthy, Wealthy, and Wise. Both time and our capacity to fully apply our capabilities are limited and it’s often difficult, seemingly impossible, to balance all three in a meaningful and beneficial way. Over the course of 3 days, EOSC’s all-inclusive experience will bring together experts from around the country to teach Campers, through the Design Thinking lens, how to optimize our capacities and live more meaningful and productive lives.”

Tech Track Sessions include:
  • AWS Lambda - we'll be bringing up a speaker from out of State
  • TBA Special guest
  • Show off your editor skills (rapid fire 7 minute talks on your favorite editor tricks and tools)
  • Engineering Standup - We'll have a "standup" with the developers who attend. It will be conducted fishbowl style for members of the community to get a peak inside the developer world
  • How to Talk to Developers - Aimed at teaching entrepreneurs and startups how to communicate with developers
Dev Alliance Sponsorship will go in part to EOSC to get the track installed and to provide scholarships for developers. Gold, Platinum and Partner levels all include at least 1 ticket to EOSC and all sponsorship benefits for EOSC will be transferred directly to your organization.

Tickets for EOSC are start at $400 + lodging (starts at $50). Please let us know on the event #3 survey if this is something you're interested in attending.
