In this issue we reach a major accreditation milestone, welcome two new cohorts of public health leaders, release new HIPAA and Lead Poisoning Prevention trainings and more.

Accreditation Program Reaches Milestone

The N.C. Local Health Department Accreditation Program announced that as of May 18, 2018 all 84 local health departments have achieved reaccreditation status through the program. In addition the team recently launched a new website and annual report video (check it out below).

N.C. Public Health Leadership Initiative Builds Leaders at the State and Local Level

A new group of public health professionals from across the state came together in August to begin a year-long journey to network, learn leadership skills and apply the skills to a challenge in their organization or community.

The partnership includes multiple entities from UNC-Chapel Hill, including NCIPH and the Epidemiology Department in the Gillings School, with the mission to develop an applied public health research, education and practice collaborative.

In the Spotlight

NCIPH wishes a fond farewell and best wishes to Dr. John Graham who retired from the institute as of June 30. “It’s been tremendously fun,” he said of his time at NCIPH, where he worked for 15 years and was instrumental in projects such as the North Carolina Incubators program, N.C. Community Health Information Portal and other health information technology projects. In addition to further exploration of his interest in the impact of artificial intelligence on our industries and society, Dr. Graham will devote his free time to fishing, volunteering, spending time with friends and family and continuing his passion for remodeling houses.

Read a recent publication co-authored by Graham on best practices for the sustainability of healthy food service guidelines in hospital cafeterias.

Check out the national presentation by Lisa Macon Harrison from Granville Vance Public Health on the Academic Health Department model established between Granville Vance and the UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health. NCIPH is thrilled to be a part of this collaboration along with Nutrition faculty member, Carmen Samuel-Hodge.

  • N.C. Public Health HIPAA: A three-part series designed for those who work as HIPAA Privacy and Security Officers in N.C. public health agencies, as well as other N.C. public health professionals who may need an understanding of HIPAA. See course details.
     
  • Preventing Lead Poisoning: A five-part Healthy Homes training series produced in partnership with the North Carolina Lead Poisoning Prevention Program and the Community Outreach and Engagement Core in the University of North Carolina Center for Environmental Health and Susceptibility. See course details.
