Decatur Campus Family Work Day and Lice Checks

TOMORROW!

The Waldorf School of Atlanta will hold our annual Decatur Campus Family Work Day from 9 am to 12 pm tomorrow, Saturday, August 11th.   This is a time when everyone in our community - teachers, parents, and children - comes together to work on our classrooms, buildings, and grounds so that they will be fresh and ready for the start of the new school year.   Each teacher will have a list of tasks to be completed in their classroom. Kindergarten Teachers may have specific tasks related to their play yards. Don't forget to bring plenty of water and a snack or lunch for you and your family to eat before our fruit pop break outside of the Hospitality Room at 11:30.  We look forward to working with you!

It is WSA's policy to conduct lice checks before students begin school in the fall and after each school break.  We encourage families to attend the lice check offered at the Decatur Campus Family Work Day from 9:00-11:30 am in order to avoid the long lines on the first day. It is also important to note that the Lice Ladies often wet heads with water spray bottles when checking for lice, so if your child is in first or eighth grade, you may prefer to do your lice checks this Saturday at the workday.

Information about Inman Park's Campus Work Day will be emailed by your teachers.

First Day of School

As we approach summer's end, one of the more frequently asked parent questions is "What happens on the first day?"  We are happy to provide some details. On the first day, Wednesday, August 15th, WSA begins with lice checks in Hazelwood Hall (starting at 7:40 am) for students in Grades 2-8 who were not checked on the workday. Grade 1 will begin their day on the playground, and Ms. Stevens will bring them to Hazelwood Hall for checks as the line dies down.  Parents will be welcomed in the Hospitality Room for coffee and conversation from 8:00-8:45 before the assembly begins at 9 am.

For the Opening Assembly, given the warm summer temperatures, grades school students may wear shorts along with a collared shirt, tucked in with a belt (unless the shirt is designed to be worn untucked, such as a Havana shirt).  This is an exception to our normal assembly dress code. Kindergarten students may wear their regular school-day attire.   Please click here to read the Dress Code.

Grades
The grade school day (Grades 1-8) will end at 1 pm, and as typical for half days, the Extended Day program will end at 4 pm.  If you plan to have your child attend the Extended Day program, please make sure to complete the paperwork (form links below) by August 13th so that teachers can make plans for your child.  Thursday,  August 16th will be the usual early release day for grades 1-5, with pick-up at 1 pm.  The middle school students will be dismissed at 3:10 pm.  Extended Day ends at 6 pm. Friday will be our first regular day of school.

Preschool/Kindergarten
Preschool/Kindergarten students do not report to class on Wednesday morning.  Kindergarten parents will remain with their children on the first day, going straight to the assembly at 9 or joining other families for a cup of coffee beforehand in the Hospitality Room.  Kindergarten parents may refer to the welcome letter from your child's teacher for class gathering information after the assembly.  All kindergarten children will go home after the class gathering. For those registered in the Afternoon Kindergarten, the program will not begin until Thursday.  Kindergarten students who are not checked for lice on Saturday's workday will be checked Thursday morning on the back deck of the 5-day kinder building.

Pizza Day Moved to Tuesday!

Grades & Middle School

Consider giving your grades/middle school child the gift of fresh, hot Avondale Pizza Cafe pizza every Tuesday through December!  At the same time, you will be supporting a very grateful 8th grade class, who are looking forward to their class trip!  There will be 16 weeks of delivery for the semester, starting on Tuesday, August 21st.  A Gluten free option is also available.  Look for a hard copy coming home with your child on the first week of school or pay online at SquareUp. Please return your order form with payment by Friday, August 17th. Order forms will be accepted after Friday, but in that case, your child's deliveries will start on the following week.  As Pizza Tuesday is a fund raiser, missed dates/orders will not be pro-rated or credited.  Contact Latonia Yarbrough with questions or comments at finance@waldorfatlanta.org.

Immunization Requirements

If you are new to the state or your child's immunization form has expired, you will need to turn in an updated Georgia State Form 3231. The school will be audited by the Board of Health a few weeks after school begins, and all students will need either an up-to-date Georgia Form 3231 on file or a new Georgia Affidavit Form 2208 for religious exemption from immunization requirements. (See attachment).  Additionally, if you have an old exemption affidavit form on file, you will need to update it with the new one as required by the state.  If you are unsure which form you have on file, please email Kathryn Macken (kmacken@waldorfatlanta.org).

Children entering Grade 7 will need booster vaccinations and updated forms.  Please follow the link to read the requirements.  Grade 7 Vaccination Requirements

Students entering Grade 1 will also need to turn in a hearing and vision form from their doctor or Board of Health.

You can visit a doctor or your local health department to bring your child's vaccination schedule up-to-date or to have them transfer out of state records into the Georgia registry. Please contact kmacken@waldorfatlanta.org if you have any questions.

Media-Lite Living

Why “media-lite?" “Lite” points to less digital media yet is not “media-free,” recognizing the digital world we live in and offering ample room for media-free recreation and entertainment!  We are not anti-technology; we are pro-human.
Please re-visit this column in the weeks ahead to learn more about this valuable resource for parents, to support your "media-lite" journey.
Feel free to email Sara Michelson at samichelson@gmail.com to share questions, comments, or to contribute to this column.
