Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training Program

The National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities (NIMHD) invites applications for the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Training (MHRT) awards. This program supports research training activities in minority health and health disparities research for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including groups underrepresented in biomedical, behavioral, clinical and social sciences research, at domestic institutions and/or at specified foreign low- and middle-income locations.

Only one application per institution is allowed.

UR Internal Deadline: Monday, August 27, 2018.

Internal applications must consist of chair’s letter, research abstract, biosketch or CV and be submitted on the required forms. To request the forms and submit applications, contact: Joyce Goodberlet (URMC), Cindy Gary (Hajim), Debra Haring (A&S), and Adele Coelho (all other schools and MAG).

Sponsor Application Deadline: Optional letter of intent is due September 11, 2018, and the proposal is due October 11, 2018.

Undergraduate Research Connection Service

The University of Rochester’s Office of Undergraduate Research coordinates the Undergraduate Placement Program (UR-UPP).  The goal of UR-UPP is to use faculty and staff submissions to streamline the process of connecting prospective mentors with undergraduates interested in research.

The program is currently looking for prospective mentors (PIs, faculty, post-docs, research staff, and graduate students) interested in working with undergraduates now or in the future.

If you have questions, please contact Teresa Long, at 276-4522.

NCATS Day 2018: Engaging Patients and Communities for Smarter Science

This is an all-day forum to share and reflect upon patient and community needs, as well as best practices in addressing those needs, so that the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) can best shape its research priorities, programs, and initiatives.

Attendees can share and discuss ways to overcome translational research challenges and leverage opportunities through effective patient and community engagement. Participants will learn strategies to broaden participation in research and to incorporate patient and community input in their work. Admission is free, but space is limited, so please register early. Date: Friday, September 28
Time: 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
Location: National Institutes of Health, William H. Natcher Building (Building 45) Rooms E1/E2, 45 Center St, Bethesda, MD 20892

Improve your Mentoring Skills With the Ever Better Mentoring Course

The University of Rochester Ever Better Mentoring Course aims to help faculty improve their mentoring practice through a series of online case studies, followed by an in-person workshop on Monday, October 22, 3:00 - 5:00 pm.

The online course modules are administered through Blackboard and foster reflection through self-directed exercises and supplemental readings. The face-to-face workshop, led by Camille Martina, Ph.D., allows mentors to share their experiences and challenges and gain additional skills and expertise.

CME credit is available to participants who complete the online modules and attend the workshop.

For more information, please contact Melissa Suter.

NIH Policy on Inclusion Across the Lifespan Takes Effect January 2019

It is essential for science to ensure individuals are included in clinical research in a manner appropriate to the scientific question under study so that the knowledge gained from research is applicable to all those affected by the disease or condition in question.

The NIH’s Inclusion Across the Lifespan Policy was issued December 19, 2017, and expands the Inclusion of Children as Participants in Clinical Research Policy to include individuals of all ages. The policy also clarifies potential justifications for age-based exclusion criteria and requires participant age at enrollment to be provided in progress reports.

The policy applies to all grant applications submitted on or after January 25, 2019. Until then, ongoing research and grant applications/proposals are subject to the Inclusion of Children in Clinical Research Policy. The NIH has many resources on their website to help investigators implement this new policy.
