Hey folks! The Broad Arrow Farm team hopes you’ve had a great summer so far!

We wanted to share with you recent developments on the farm:

Summer Internship Program - Our farm manager, Colton Dow, recruited three college students/recent graduates to live and work on the farm.

Erica, Andres and Matthew have done it all, from feeding and watering to assisting births. They are smart, hard-working, and fearless (how else do you describe someone willing to nudge a 1,200lb boar toward his new paddock?!). They could be doing anything they wanted, and they chose to work on a new-ish livestock farm on the coast of Maine. We’re grateful to have them.

Hogs - We now have ten sows in production with groups of three or four farrowing (pig for “giving birth”) every two months. We currently have about 100 “meat hogs,” 35 nursing piglets, and, of course, our big daddy, Boaris.

Eggs - In May, we started a flock of 100 laying hens that now produce 7 to 8 dozen eggs a day. The laying hens live in a mobile coop - we call it the Egg Ark - so they always have access to fresh pasture, and are well protected from predators.

Roaster chickens - Our “meat birds” also live in mobile coops on fresh pasture. Last week we processed on-farm 25 roaster chickens weighing between 5 and 7lbs. We will continue to grow and process birds for the remainder of the summer.

Turkeys
- In May, 100 turkey poults arrived from the hatchery. Their mobile coop is called the Turkey Ark. Turkeys, more than any other livestock, are best able to convert what they forage into body weight (that is to say, food for you and me). These beautiful birds will be ready for Thanksgiving and Christmas!

Lambs - Our small herd of heritage-breed sheep grazes our pasture in front of our birds, eating the best grasses, fertilizing the soil and improving its condition with their hoof action. This grass-based method yields spectacular lamb - you haven’t lived until you’ve had a grass-fed lamb burger!

Farm Store - We opened an on-farm store in July, and are very happy to give people a physical location to purchase our products. Everything we sell we either make ourselves or bring in from other Maine farms and suppliers. We’re trying to offer customers a taste of the local.

Restaurants - Our Director of Post-Mortem Operations (I know, nice title!), Omen Viele, continues to introduce our pork to more of Maine’s finest and most innovative restaurants and butcher shops. They are knowledgeable and demanding customers, and serving them requires a serious commitment to quality, distinctiveness and consistency. They help us get better everyday!

Swag - We have a variety of Broad Arrow Farm merchandise: t-shirts, hats, beer mugs, Yeti coffee travelers, etc. Help us spread the word!

Children (Maeve, Molly & Eoin Sullivan) working - A rare site, indeed...

You can find images and videos of all these and more on our Instagram feed (@BroadArrowFarm) and our Facebook page (https://m.facebook.com/BroadArrowFarmBristol/). Go to our website (http://www.broadarrowfarm.com/contact/) and sign-up for our newsletter.

Have a great summer! We look forward to seeing you in the farm store! We invite you to stroll our pastures to check-in on the poultry, sheep, and wooly Mangalitsa piglets!

Cheers!

Team Broad Arrow
