Indivisibles,

We are 86 days from the November 6 election.  It is easy, during the congressional recess, the sleepy days of summer, and the mind numbing idiocracy coming from our President to “tune out.”  And it is such a relief, if only for a while, to stop paying attention.  It is almost a necessity to remain sane and positive.

However, as we get closer to this election, it must be all hands on deck.  Just this week, the Trump Administration continued to expand the scope of immigrants being excluded from United States Citizenship as the administration initiated an attack on legal immigrants!  Legal immigrants who have received any type of Public Assistance or whose family members have used it may not be eligible for U.S. citizenship. This will penalize legal immigrants who have used Obamacare, food stamps, children’s health insurance (CHIP), or other public assistance.  Only Congress can stop this dark, anti-American creep.

ISB SPOTLIGHT: Flip the Senate

Background: After last week’s toss-up election in a traditionally red district in Ohio, most political pollsters see continued signs of a midterm Blue Wave in the House. We can focus on flipping the Senate too. Stopping Trump’s corrupt cronies from serving in government positions, and halting the confirmation of extremist judges, such as Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, can only happen if we have a Senate majority.  Cook Political Report is calling the Democratic Senate seats below toss-ups or flippable in the November midterm elections.  We can’t afford to lose one Democratic seat, and we need to win a few more to break the Republican’s razor thin 51-49 majority.

What We Can Do: Check out the campaigns below, volunteer to phone bank, urge friends and family in these states to register and to vote Democratic, and please, donate if you can.

Toss-up Democratic Seats:

FL: Bill Nelson. Running against gun loving, climate denying Gov. Rick Scott. Nelson made news this week revealing that Russians are hacking the Florida election

IN: Joe Donnelly. Running against conservative businessman Mike Braun. Although Donnelly has voted with Trump 60% of the time he has also voted against the tax scam and to save the ACA. He strongly supports Social Security and Medicare, programs under attack by the Republican majority.

MO: Claire McCaskill. Running against Trump loyalist, Josh Hawley. She is considered the most endangered Democratic Senator running for reelection. Her campaign has been subject to Russian hacking

ND: Heidi Heitkamp. Running against conservative, anti-regulation, pro-life, tax cutting Kevin Cramer. Like McCaskill’s seat, Heitkamp’s is seriously endangered.

WV: Joe Manchin. A blue-dog Democrat running against Trump fanboy, wall lover and ACA hater Pat Morrisey.

Traditionally Republican seats that can be flipped:

AZ: Kyrsten Sinema and Deedra Abboud are the Democratic candidates for the upcoming August 28 primary. The moderate Sinema leads the progressive Abboud, and is the candidate endorsed by Planned Parenthood, the DSCC, and Emily’s list.

NV: Jacky Rosen. Running against Trump sycophant, Dean Heller. Rosen was elected to the House in 2016 and is a member of the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. This is a very tight race; Rosen stands a fair chance of defeating Heller.

TN:  Phil Bredesen. Running against Rep. Marsha Blackburn for Senator Bob Corker’s open seat. As a popular former mayor and governor, Bredesen stands a chance of winning in a state that leans Republican. Blackburn is a social conservative and strong supporter of Trump.

TX: Beato O’Rourke. Running against Ted Cruz. O’Rourke is running as a real Democrat, and supports, among other Democratic priorities, public education, strengthening the ACA and Medicaid, protecting Title X and a woman's right to choose. Recent polls show O’Rourke closing in on Cruz

NATIONAL SECURITY

1.“Russia if you’re listening…”

So far two Democratic Senate midterm campaigns (Claire McCaskill’s, MO, and Bill Nelson’s, FL) have been hacked by Russia. The Defending Elections from Threats by Establishing Redlines or the "DETER" Act (S2313 and HR4884) would impose new sanctions if U.S. intelligence officials determine Russia meddled in U.S. elections. The DETER Act would also make sanctions more automatic and aim to punish Russia’s finance, energy, defense and other sectors.

Sample Script: I’m calling from [zip code] to urge Senator Harris/Feinstein / Representative Carbajal to co-sponsor the DETER Act ( S2313 and HR4884 ) and bring it to the floor for a vote. We have evidence from 2 Democratic campaigns that Russia is once again hacking our elections. We need to pass this bill now.

ENVIRONMENT

2. No Fracking in Santa Barbara County

The Trump Administration has declared open season for drillers to pollute 1.6 million acres of CA’s public lands. In a notice of intent published on the Federal Register Wednesday, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) said it would prepare an environmental impact statement on the use of fracking on 400,000 acres of public land and 1.2 million acres of mineral estate overseen by BLM in California counties including Fresno, San Luis Obispo, and Santa Barbara. Because fracking uses a high amount of toxic chemicals it is particularly dangerous for places like Santa Barbara with shallow groundwater depths.

Email: blm_ca_bkfo_oil_gas_update@blm.gov  directly to the Federal Register before September 7.

Mail:  Bakersfield Field Office, Bureau of Land Management, Attn: Bakersfield RMP Hydraulic Fracturing Analysis, 3801 Pegasus Drive, Bakersfield, CA 93308

Sample Written Script: I strongly oppose the BLM’s plans to open 400,000 acres of public land and 1.2 million acres of mineral estate overseen by the BLM to fracking. Hundreds of fracking chemicals are known to be toxic to humans and wildlife, and several are known to cause cancer, according to several peer-reviewed studies by scientists and state regulators. A 2015 report from the California Council on Science and Technology highlighted these risks.

National forests, monuments and wildlife refuges and preserves harbor sensitive ecosystems and wildlife, protect important watersheds, and are places of recreation. They deserve closer scrutiny to evaluate if fracking is appropriate in these areas. I urge the agency to restrict oil and gas development that impacts public lands and conduct a thorough review of fracking and its impacts on water, air, wildlife, and recreation.

3. Save the Endangered Species Act

Since 1973 the Endangered Species Act has provided needed protections to endangered wildlife, and prevented the extinction of 99% of listed species. It has always been and continues to be overwhelming popular with the public. It is now in the Trump administration's crosshairs. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Fisheries has been forced by law to seek public input on proposed reforms to “Improve & Modernize Implementation of the Endangered Species Act”. Deadline is September 24th. Comment here.

Sample Written Script:  I strongly oppose the NOAA & FWS proposed rule changes that appear designed to undermine the effectiveness of the Endangered Species Act (ESA). These rule changes are an overreach by these agencies into the legislative realm, and they clearly favor challengers to the law and run opposed to the actual spirit of the legislation . The numerous NOAA & FWS proposed changes to definitions and language are death by a hundred cuts to the ESA.  Rather than suggest practical process and "interagency cooperation" changes, the NOAA & FWS are clearly seeking to rewrite the actual legal language to be used in the enforcement of the ESA. In short, the NOAA and FWS should WITHDRAW all suggested changes and leave untouched one of the most successful laws ever passed by Congress.

Chlorpyrifos banned! A federal appeals court has ruled that Trump’s EPA broke the law by ignoring its own scientists’ warnings about the known dangers of chlorpyrifos and ordered the EPA to move forward with a ban on the chemical within the next 60 days. You did it! ISB had two actions of this issue, and we won.

On Tuesday progressive Democrat Rashida Tlaib won her special primary election in Michigan’s 13th District. She will be the first Muslim woman to serve in Congress in U.S. history.

Taking a moment this week to remember Heather Heyer, who died a year ago this weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia.  Heather was murdered when a driver slammed into a group of counter-protestors demonstrating against the alt-right group who had descended to protest the removal a statue of Robert E. Lee.  One year later, the Heather Heyer Foundation carries on her idealism and promotes social justice.

If you are not outraged, you are not paying attention! Heather Heyer
