Hi Moms and Dads

Hope you all had a super long weekend.

It’s CAKE SALE week this week! This time it is the Penguin Class’ chance to provide the eats. We look forward to what you bring in on Friday. Please remember home-made treats are simply the best!!!!! Take this opportunity to bake with your child. They will love it and will learn and practice so many useful and important skills.
As Pre- school teachers, we bake with the children in our class. It’s a great activity for bonding as a group, the children learn so much, and we have a fun treat to share at the end of it.  When your child is old enough to hold a spoon, you should start baking together too.
8 Benefits of baking with your child!
  1. It builds maths skills
  2. It enriches oral vocabulary
  3. It teachers scientific concepts
  4. It boosts reading skills
  5. Introduces life skills
  6. It develops fine motor skills
  7. It promotes social skills
Top 10 tips for baking with kids
1:  Get out all the ingredients first.
2:  Have all your supplies ready and close at hand.
3:  Be prepared for a mess!
4:  Read the recipe beforehand so you’re very familiar with it.
5:  Talk to your child or children beforehand about what you’re going to do and how they are going to participate.
6:  If it’s your first time baking with kids, or you have a toddler, choose a simple recipe.
7:  If you have more than one child that you want to involve, have them figure out who is going to add each ingredient and do each part of the recipe beforehand.
8:  While you are baking, if you have a very young child or an eager one (translation: impulsive) like mine, try putting all the ingredients out of reach until it’s time to add it.
9:  Try allowing your child to create their own recipe!
10:  Make a big deal about taste-testing the results together.
AND HAVE FUN!!!!!

EQ Waiting and Persisting
GENERAL Occupations
LANGUAGE Letter P potato, pupil, pea, parrot
MATHS Mass heavy and light. Length long/short, tall /
The children loved dress up day and the high light was Dashni visiting our class looking radiant and beautiful in her sari. The children were all eager to wear a Beanie on their forehead and tried hard to copy Dashni when she showed them how to dance and move their hands. They thoroughly enjoyed the vermicelli dessert and I was so please that all the children were willing to try it. Once they had tasted it a few children had 3 helpings! Thank you so much Dashni for the time and effort you put into organising everything, it was really very special. It is always so good to have parents visit the class to share a skill or something about themselves. This week we will be discussing Occupations so if you have something of interest to show or teach the class please share it with us. Skyler was so proud that his mother had come in to share her talent with us. So if you can draw, paint, sew, knit, do karate, dance or are good at woodwork come in and show us how to do it.  Please tell your child about the work you do as they often reply my mom works in a office or they reply he/she goes to work. If your occupation requires you to use a special item eg an electrician uses a volt meter or a plumber uses a pipe wrench can you please send it to school. In our discussions I ask questions to get children to think about things and solve problems. I encourage them to think about who would use a specific object, when and how. We also link it to other occupations eg a stethoscope is used by a doctor, nurse and vet.
In our fantasy area we have set up a shop using toy SA money and the Checkers brand products. We set up a shop earlier this year and the children loved it. We have learned about SA currency and money so it will be good for the children to use it and to learn through play and experimentation.
In our EQ lessons we continued to discuss consequences for behaviour. Most of the children are independent and are able to resolve problems by themselves but a few children still need support. The boys have been very good with their shoes and clothing and are bringing their belongings inside.
Mathematics: I have put rulers, tape measures, pieces of string and balance scales on our maths table. The children are free to experiment with the media and will measure various objects in the class as well as the length of various objects and pieces of string. One of our activities this week will be tying shoelaces so please continue to help your child in this area.
Language: Please remember to send pictures or objects to school. We will also be playing phonics games and matching words to objects.

EQ:  Persistence/Resilience
IQ:  Birds
Focus:  Visual perception
Number Concepts:  Recognition of numbers to 10, Understanding of more/less and equal
I hope all the mums had a fabulous "Women's Day" and everyone had a restful long weekend.
Over the next two weeks we will discuss "Birds" and "Persistence/Resilience" when trying to attain your goal.  I am very proud of my Starfish class who are showing great persistence with their goals.  So far there are already 3 children who have learned to tie their shoelaces this term.  Continue to encourage them to practice their individual and our class goal, even if they have achieved it.  Often once they can do it they don't practice and then they forget how to do it.  When they get frustrated, encourage them and praise them for trying.  The Goal box is filling up with goals from the children.  There are still a few that have not yet posted their goal in the Goal Box.
Our Focus is "Visual Perception" over the next two weeks.  Play shape games and number games to assist them visually recognize them.  Ask them to find items hidden in pictures while you are reading.  Play memory games.  Blocks and Lego are great for visual perception.  Encourage them to build puzzles too.  While out walking ask them to spot numbers, shapes and colours in the environment.
For our number concepts this week we are concentrating on number recognition and the understanding of more/less and equal.  Play little games involving more/less and equal and ask the children, how many more or how many less?  Don't make it too hard?  Start easy as we want them to succeed.  How many sausages on your plate?  How many sausages on dad’s plate?  Who has more?  How many more do they have?
Our outing to "Lakeside Fire Station" is coming up and there are still a few parents who have not signed the notice to allow their child to attend.  Lifts are also needed, please!  Thank you!
Dates to Diarise:
17 August - Penguin Cake sale - R5

SPARE CLOTHES
Please remember to pack in some spare clothes for your child each day, particularly the younger ones. The children often need to change for various reasons and it becomes a little tricky when there is nothing for them to wear!!!
FACEBOOK
We love sharing pictures from the school day. Teachers only put photos up on our closed Facebook page once a week. Any parent who does not want their child’s photos to appear on Facebook should let their teacher know. www.facebook.com/fhpps.

And on that note...

This is what I hope that I have taught my child!
“Don’t compare yourself to the rest,
All that matters is that you try your best.
You are beautiful, funny and smart,
But what’s more important is what’s in your heart!
Wealth and status mean nothing at all,
A person with love is the richest of all!”
Regards, Paula
