Where's Kirsten? - The Sequel
Daniel Jessop is going to be taking over the reins as Neighbourhood Coordinator for Todmorden and Ryburn Wards throughout September while Kirsten is continuing to support the Public Health team and the Active Calderdale project.
Daniel will be supported by the rest of the team and is familiar with the Upper Valley area so can hit the ground running and Kirsten is of course only a phone call away so all should continue as normal. If you have any issues that you would like to talk to Daniel about you can contact him at daniel.jessop@calderdale.gov.uk or by telephone on 01706 548133 from the 1st of September.
This also means that Shafiq will be leaving us for a new post in Bradford later this month. We wish Shafiq all the best in his new job and welcome Daniel as Kirsten’s temporary replacement.
Local Plan Consultation
Consultation 10th August to 5pm 24th September 2018
The ambitious plan identifies sites for around 9500 new homes and areas for economic growth over the next 15 years, supporting the Council’s Vision 2024 to make Calderdale a place where people want to live, work, visit and invest.
The Council has calculated that it needs around 12,600 new homes by 2033, however around 1900 are already in the planning process, and about 1300 homes, which have not already been identified, are expected to come forward through future planning applications.
There will be a six week period during which members of the public may make formal representations, or comments, on the proposals.
Although the Council will not be able to amend the draft Local Plan after reviewing the representations made by the public, they will be included with the draft Local Plan when it is submitted to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
Calderdale’s Local Plan will then be examined in detail by an independent Planning Inspector appointed by the Secretary of State. The examination could last around nine months.
Adoption of the plan by Calderdale Council, following receipt of the Inspector’s Report, is expected to be confirmed by the end of 2019.
More details here. http://calderdale.gov.uk/localplan
If you require assistance to view and comment online a planning officer will be available from 4 – 7pm at Hebden Bridge Library on Thursday the 23rd August or Halifax Library Thursday 6th September.
Assistance is also available at Halifax Customer First throughout the consultation period.

Warden's Update
A resident from Todmorden recently expressed a wish to carry out some litter picking in the centre of the town. This was advertised locally and on Facebook and about a dozen people turned up carry this out with the help of Community Wardens Zoe and Simon. Fifteen bags of refuse were collected. This proved a popular event, and it was decided that further picks will be organised.
Following concerns expressed by local residents, the Upper Valley Community Wardens Zoe and Simon teamed up with local Councillors Scullion and Patient and those living nearby to monitor speeds on the A646 near to Brearley Fields. The Speed Indicator Device (SID) was used to measure vehicle speeds and signs were displayed asking drivers to be aware of the local speed limit, as well as Doris, our cardboard WPC being placed a hundred meters further up the road to act as a secondary reminder to drive safely. Several vehicles were recorded over the 40mph speed limit, details of which will be passed on to the Police

Hebden Bridge Town Hall Rain Garden Planter Celebrations
Slow the Flow Calderdale would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has been involved in designing, building, funding, or coming along to the launch event for the rain garden planters at Hebden Bridge Town Hall. It was a fantastic team effort, and they had a great day for the launch event on Friday June 29th - with, ironically, not a drop of rain!
The rain garden planters are part of a wider initiative to help us understand how urban Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) can play a part in flood alleviation by slowing the flow of rainwater into the drainage system, thus reducing the potential for combined sewer flooding.
It is easy to feel complacent in this beautiful summer of hot, dry weather, but heavy rainfall now could easily result in surface water flooding, as hard, dry ground sheds water more easily into the drains.
If each household and business in the Calder Valley adopted just one of these SuDS measures, it could have a dramatic effect on the flood peak and surface water flooding during stormy weather. These methods are fairly cheap and easy to install at home, in work, in school or in public places.
Councillor Carol Stow, the Mayor of Hebden Royd Town Council, officially ‘opened’ the planters (with her ceremonial watering can, due to the lack of rain). Carol is a fervent supporter of Slow The Flow Calderdale’s work, and they were grateful to her for agreeing to open this brand new and very important initiative which shows how we can all use water in different ways.
The planters will remain in the courtyard at the Town Hall for the foreseeable future. Slow The Flow Calderdale will be monitoring them carefully, using a bespoke system to provide scientific evidence about just how much they help to slow the flow of storm water. In a rainfall event, water from the downpipes is taken through the soil/plants, before making its way more slowly back into the drainage system.
In heavy rainfall/flood events, many urban SuDS interventions can help to reduce flood levels. In particular, these types of systems can help to reduce the impact of overflow from Calderdale’s combined surface and foul sewers. This reduces the risk of contaminated flood water entering our homes and rivers. These planters now feature on Slow The Flow Calderdale’s shiny new ‘case studies’ page on their website.
Mytholmroyd Update

Some of the work will be carried out overnight.

Mytholmroyd Station Partnership has again been been shortlisted in the It's Your Station category. Congratulations to all involved.
Plans to improve flood protection for the people of Mytholmroyd by removing timber cabins
Three timber cabins, built overhanging the river, are being demolished so that a flood defence scheme in Mytholmroyd can be built to protect residents and businesses.
The row of empty properties at 18–22 New Road need to be removed to make way for the construction of a permanent flood wall in this location. The concrete wall will be 1.15 metres high, with natural stone facing on both sides so that it is sympathetic to the railway viaduct and existing surrounding properties.
The timber cabins which overhang Cragg Brook date back to 1907. They originated from ‘Dawson City’ near Heptonstall, north of Hebden Bridge, which housed 600 labourers who built the Walshaw Dean reservoirs. When their work was completed the contractors auctioned off the single-storey wooden cabins and several were relocated around Calderdale. They were bought by local people who used them to set up small businesses including an ironmongers on New Road, and more recently a chiropodist who has moved out to West End Terrace. A full archaeological recording study will take place during the demolition to record details for posterity.
Whilst of local interest, the unoccupied timber cabins have been altered to such an extent that their architectural significance has been considerably diminished. These buildings were not built for longevity, originating as makeshift temporary structures. The cabins are highly vulnerable to the forces produced by floodwater in the adjacent brook.
Helen Batt, Calderdale Catchment Director for the Environment Agency, said: “Unfortunately the cabins will be removed to enable the flood walls at this location to be constructed. It is part of a flood scheme for Mytholmroyd which is now taking shape on the ground. The foundations for the new footbridge on Cragg Brook have recently been completed and we are currently installing a new drainage system on Burnley Road.”
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Economic Strategy, Cllr Barry Collins, said: “Approval has been given for these exposed structures to be replaced with a new flood wall, which is a necessary step in providing the high standard of protection required to help safeguard properties in the area against flooding.”
The demolition will take place mid to late August and there will be traffic management in place in New Road during some of this work.
Vital works to be completed as part of the scheme include construction of new, raised and improved flood walls, the relocation of Caldene Bridge, widening of the river channel at Caldene Bridge and on the right bank in front of St Michael’s Church and flood proofing of the buildings next to the river. Work will also be carried out to reduce the risk of flooding from the canal, culverts and surface water along Burnley Road.

August Bank Holiday Collection Dates
Please remember your waste and recycling collections will be a day later throughout the bank holiday week. I.e. If your usual collection day is Tuesday the 28th of August it will be collected on the Wednesday instead.
We prefer flat plastic!
Please remember to squash your cans and plastics before placing them in the white bag; they will take up less room so you can fit more in the sack and it will help the items to stay more securely inside the sack on a windy day.
Top Tip - try riunsing plastic bottles with warm water as it makes the plastic softer and easier to squash flat.
Bulky Household Waste Collections
We can remove your bulky household items (such as chairs, beds, tables, washing machines) from outside your house. Household items cost £25 per collection of up to 8 items, except fridges and freezers which are £25 per item. To arrange a bulky waste collection, please complete the online form.
And Finally...

The Dream Fund was created to encourage charities to collaborate and apply for their dream project, the project they have always wanted to deliver but never had the opportunity to do so.
The Fund supports charities across England, Scotland and Wales to develop innovative solutions to society’s most challenging problems. Applications that can score highly in their originality, ambition and collaborative nature stand the highest chances of being successful.
