There will be a dinner program at the Gibson Island Club on August 16. It is their annual Environmental Dinner Program. This year they are having Dr. Thomas D. Seeley from Cornell University discuss how honey bees make decisions in selecting their hives. This is based on his book Honeybee Democracy.
The event is open to the public. Tickets are $65 per person. Cocktails start at 6:00 PM. That includes one drink ticket, a seated dinner at the Gibson Island Club (featuring items made with local honey) and, of course, Dr. Seeley's lecture. There will be a cash bar as well.

AABA August 21, 2018 Meeting
Arlington Echo Outdoor Education Center
New Beekeeper Session: Starting at 6:00 to 7:00 pm
Experienced AABA beekeepers will answer questions and demonstrate hive management while inspecting the Arlington Echo hives (weather permitting - bring protective gear).
Regular meeting: 7:00 to 9:00 pm
2019 AABA meeting dates will be posted on the aabees.org website shortly.
2019 Short Course registration forms will be available on the aabees.org website in mid-September. If you know anyone who is interested, please let them know. Register early because class fills quickly. The first class on equipment is now in December.
Michael Doyle will speak about the AA County Fair (September 12-16, 2018). A form will be available for volunteers to man the observation hive and answer question about bees.
Key Speaker: Bart Smith will speak about bee diseases
Bart Smith has enjoyed working with honey bees for over 40 years. During that time, he specialized in bee diseases, parasites, and pests that affect honey bee health. He received an MS degree in entomology from the University of Maryland where he investigated the bee louse, Braula coeca, a wingless fly that is found only on honey bees. While at the University, Bart began working for the Maryland Department of Agriculture (MDA) and became the State Apiary Inspector for 27 years. After leaving the MDA, he worked as a support scientist at the USDA Bee Research Laboratory in Beltsville, MD. His duties at the Bee Lab included running the bee disease diagnostic lab, and he had overall responsibility for the 400 honey bee colonies maintained by the BRL for research purposes. After 13 years, he retired at the end of 2015. Bart has been a long-time supporter of the AABA until he moved to Howard County. He served as program chairman for over 20 years.

Hive Management by Season - what are experienced beekeepers doing in their hives
Check stores/resources, honey and pollen stores, feed if needed
Mite test/treat if needed/retest to be sure effective
Check if queenright, disease, etc.
Guard against robbing.
Start thinking about winter preparations.

Apiary Registration
Maryland law states that beekeepers must register apiaries within 30 days of obtaining bees with the Maryland Department of Agriculture.
