Using Satellite Data to Improve Great Lakes Monitoring and Forecasting

Dr. Yuanyuan Jia, Ohio State University

Dr. Yuanyuan Jia is a CIGLR postdoctoral research fellow at the Ohio State University working with Drs. C.K. Shum (OSU) and Philip Chu (NOAA GLERL). Dr. Jia is using satellite radar altimetry data spanning more than three decades (1985-2018) to expand the use of near real-time satellite data and provide more detailed information on Great Lakes water levels, wave heights, wind speed, lake ice, water color, and potentially meteotsunami signals, ultimately supporting improved forecasts of these factors. READ MORE

Phosphorus Reduction in Lake Erie: The Solution to Harmful Algal Blooms?
Mikayla Baer (Dr. Thomas Johengen), University of Michigan

Regulations set by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement (Annex 4) are outlined to reduce the total phosphorus load into Lake Erie by 40% by the year 2025, which is expected to curb algal growth. However, recent studies suggest that nitrogen could also play a vital role in the growth of toxin producing harmful algae, leaving scientists wondering if reducing phosphorus alone will lead to reductions in HABs. Mikayla Baer is a CIGLR Graduate Student Research Assistant, whose research aims to provide a better understanding of how phosphorus reductions similar to those required by the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement will affect algal biomass and toxins in Lake Erie. READ MORE

Forecasting Lake Erie Hypoxia

A team of scientists led by Mark Rowe (CIGLR) and Craig Stow (NOAA GLERL) is working to improve predictions for when and where hypoxia will occur in Lake Erie. The showcase product from this research is the Experimental Lake Erie Hypoxia Forecast, which provides short-term forecasts of the distribution of low-oxygen water in three dimensions in the lake, giving water intake managers precious lead-time in anticipation of hypoxic events. READ MORE
