Modern analytics have been really bad for Major League players. The stats have essentially exposed a player's real value. That's why free agents have lingered and the contract dollars are down. In the meantime, at least one part of the analytics revolution has prompted a front office weakness: the rate of position players pitching is way up — and it's because teams are intentionally taking starters out of the game earlier than ever. If the bullpen then falters, teams have no choice but to call on a position player. It's always fun to watch as a fan but the truth is it's a bad look for the team and huge injury risk put on the players. It's a relatively small but important signal about player value on a roster.
