Modern analytics have been really bad for Major League players. The stats have essentially exposed a player's real value. That's why free agents have lingered and the contract dollars are down. In the meantime, at least one part of the analytics revolution has prompted a front office weakness: the rate of position players pitching is way up — and it's because teams are intentionally taking starters out of the game earlier than ever. If the bullpen then falters, teams have no choice but to call on a position player. It's always fun to watch as a fan but the truth is it's a bad look for the team and huge injury risk put on the players. It's a relatively small but important signal about player value on a roster

This is heavy. Yankees catcher Thurman Munson died 39 years ago last week in a plane crash he was piloting. Pilot error was blamed in the official report but questions have lingered about the equipment and circumstances surrounding that tragic day in Ohio. Newly released court deposition documents reveal riveting details about Munson's life and death. (The New York  Times)

spit it out

If you don't know the Cape Cod League, it's a college summer baseball league. College players come play for a small town team, often live with local families, get more playing experience — and they use wood bats! It's a delightful slice of Americana. Meanwhile, the league is also a proving ground for up & coming broadcasters. Bryan Curtis reports on Cape Cod's broadcaster finishing school. (The Ringer)
