Welcome to the third issue of the Information and Systems
Engineering ECP Newsletter. In this issue, we are reminding
you about the Vice Chancellor's Fellowship positions that
are open. If you know of anyone who is interested in
applying, please encourage them to look at the job posting
and/or put them in contact with me if they have any questions.

Also in the newsletter, there are several opportunities available
including an invitation to VD61+ LIVE, a 2 day event in Brisbane
that will display over 50 projects showing the latest data science
and technology as well as a Call for Proposals for the AMAZON
Research Awards. Affiliates are invited to the Opening of OpenLab Melbourne this Friday, 10 August and you may want to look at the
newly branded APRINTERN formerly AMSI Intern, which now
includes all disciplines.

Work on the  EFI 2019 is progressing nicely as ECP Directors review Concept Papers and ideas for Program Inclusion submitted recently. The themes are now starting to take shape allowing each topic to cover many of the ECPs' research priorities.

It's great to receive positive feedback from several researchers who were successful with their CDF applications. Many are already quite active with their projects and I look forward to seeing their outcomes.

The Centre for Information Discovery and Data Analytics will be launched later this year. An exciting program is being devised and I hope to be sharing this with you soon. This Centre specialises in developing new approaches to find relevant information in massive data collections. With an established history of internationally renowned research in information retrieval, data mining, databases, knowledge discovery, statistics, and machine learning, CIDDA establishes a capability for processing the enormous volume of data produced by new technologies.

I would like to welcome Dr Gerard (Gerry) Roe who has recently replaced Rebecca Shepherd as Sector Manager, Research Innovation & Entrepreneurship with R&I. He'll be providing industry advice and support with the Information and Systems (Engineering ) and the Biomedical and Health Innovation ECPs.  I'd like to thank Rebecca for all of her hard work and support during her time with this platform.

I've been invited to give a Keynote talk at the 24th China Conference on Information Retrieval (CCIR 2018) as well as visit Tsinghua University in Beijing from 24 - 30 September. This event is highly significant as it rates as one of the world's top information retrieval research groups. If anyone is interested in talking to me about this when I return, feel free to send me an email.

Cheers for now,

Mark Sanderson
