Royal Holloway's Welcome Week begins 22 September

Welcome to this special edition of Community Matters. We want to take this opportunity to share some information with you about activities which may affect residents during this year’s Welcome Week when our students join us ahead of the new term.

A message from the Principal

As the university gears up for the start of a new academic year, we are excited to welcome a new cohort of students to our university, and to our community. As part of the wider community we are keen that our students settle in to their halls and homes safely and considerately, and become good neighbours.

Our students bring many positives to the local area, from award-winning volunteering initiatives, creative community events and investment in local businesses and enterprises. However, we do recognise that a very small number of students take time to adjust to their new living arrangements and this does occasionally cause concern for their neighbours.

As such, we are taking a number of steps before the start of term to ensure that we communicate to students the importance of being considerate neighbours, and our expectations of them. This edition of Community Matters also provides some important local updates relating to the start of term.

I’d like to thank you for your continued support of the university. I am always delighted to hear the many positive comments that come from you, whether from those who benefit from student projects, those who attend our events on campus or those who simply enjoy spending time in our beautiful surroundings.

I hope this relationship continues to grow throughout the academic year as we look forward to welcoming students to the Runnymede area.

Temporary diversions affecting Harvest Road on weekend of 22-23 September

On Saturday 22 and Sunday 23 September, students will be welcomed into their halls of residence across Royal Holloway's Campus.

To ease the flow of traffic from the A30, and discourage new students and visitors from accessing the George Eliot Hall from wider residential roads, the university has worked with Surrey County Council to manage a temporary diversion on the lower part of Harvest Road.

The portion of Harvest Road directly between the two blocks of George Eliot Hall will be closed to incoming traffic on both days from 8am until 6pm. Access to the upper part of Harvest Road will be via South Road.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused. Any questions or concerns should be directed to rhulsecurity@rhul.ac.uk

Campaign to create a cohesive community for all

While the majority of Royal Holloway students settle in well to the local area, there has been some frustration among residents in relation to issues such as noise and littering.  Along with the Students’ Union, the university is continuing to impress on all of our students the need for a cohesive and neighbourly ethos.

As part of its student communications, Royal Holloway has worked with local residents to create a video that will be shared with students to highlight the impact of antisocial behaviour on residents and their families.

You can view the video here.

The video supports the series of messages delivered to students throughout the term. This includes the ‘Good Neighbour Guide’, delivered to all student households, which lays out our expectations of behaviour and provides support and advice about living off campus. The university is working to ensure a positive start to this term that will continue throughout the year. However, if any issues do arise please contact community@royalholloway.ac.uk
or call: 01784 276612.

Freshers' Ball will be held on Saturday 29 September

Royal Holloway’s academic year commences on Monday 24 September, and the Students' Union will be welcoming new arrivals with its Freshers’ Ball on Saturday 29 September.

This year’s event, which will feature outdoor music performances, has been relocated to the South Quad of Founder’s Building, further away from the A30, to help reduce risk of disturbance. The event will commence at 8pm with the main stage closing at 12.30am. The Students' Union will be providing free minibus transport for all students to get home safely.

The Students’ Union is liaising with Runnymede Borough Council, and together they will endeavour to ensure any noise disturbance is kept to a minimum. The Students' Union will be conducting regular sound monitoring visits throughout the local area over the course of the night, liaising with the environmental health team to minimise the impact on the local community.

Minimising noise after the event is a key focus for the Students' Union. They will be running a number of awareness campaigns amongst the students to raise awareness of the issue. If you experience problems on the night please contact Royal Holloway campus security on 01784 443063.

We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Residents’ Associations of both Egham and Englefield Green for their continued support and understanding, and apologise if this annual event impacts your evening.
