Vol 2.5 July-August 2018

The Philippine Micronesia Field continues to move forward with God's help and blessing!

Development of Extension Education

In July, David met with 10 of the 12 districts of our field on the topic of how to develop extension education more. There is a new excitement growing about how to train more people in ministry. Not everyone can attend one of the two Bible colleges in the Philippines. They work, have families, and cannot leave their home areas. Right now, there are 200 students enrolled in the course of study in the Philippines outside of the two colleges. David has cast the vision of doubling this in the next few years. David also made a video of a course called "Introduction to the Bible" for pastors in Micronesia. If you get bored, you can watch it on youtube.

Apocalyptic Literature

David had a good time teaching three students about Daniel and Revelation for Asia-Pacific Nazarene Theological Seminary. It had been 10 years since he taught this course. Thankfully, he had 150 plus pages of lecture notes, so that saved a lot in preparation. He continues his blog through Revelation (click here if interested). These are challenging books. He has been refreshed in his thinking about God's goal for humanity.

Regional Course of Study Advisory Committee

David continues his work as the chair of the Asia-Pacific RCOSAC. We met in July at Taiwan Nazarene Theological College in Taipei. This college was closed for several decades but restarted a few years ago. It is making great progress. The RCOSAC is developing a new curriculum for the Course of Study towards ordination. David is the primary editor of a set of teaching handbooks, one of which he wrote on the topic of how to interpret the Bible. The goal is to have these ready in one year.

Re-envisioning Theological Education 2.0

One more big meeting that David led was to look at how to develop theological education on our region. Ten people gathered in our field office from Asia, Europe, and the US. Important ideas were talked about during our 3 1/2 days together. These ideas will be shared through Nazarene news, writings, and seminars in the coming weeks and months.

Shan’s Ministry

“I’ve been working with these young boys named Forest & Peter Owens.  They are the sons of Hope and Nate Owens, Asia-Pacific Regional Communication Coordinators. Every Wednesday I have been going over to their house and helping to keep them entertained while their parents are at work. Every week I would plan one craft project. Last week this ministry ended because Forest and Peter started school. Now, I’m preparing to leave for home assignment in the U.S.A.  I’m hoping to help out with children at churches that we visit.  Let me know if I can be a help at your church.”

Joel

After being away for 10 months studying at NNU and traveling across Europe, Joel is finally home!  Joel writes:

“This summer I was very fortunate to be able to visit 9 countries in Europe, as well as, Thailand and the Philippines. I made so many new friends and made so many memories. The best part was immersing myself in the different cultures of each country I traveled to. My favorite part was being able to stay with locals from each country. We were able to stay with and meet up with friends in Denmark, Finland, Italy, Netherlands, and Thailand. Being able to live with locals helped give me a real perspective of their respective countries.”

Rhonda

July and August have been busy months with assisting Dave and continuing to develop Member Care on our field. Our theme for member care, “Encourage one another day after day” comes from Hebrews 3:13, “Encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called ‘Today,’ so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.” To help encourage our fellow missionary brothers and sisters on the field, I’ve recently launched a prayer/encouragement calendar to pray together and encourage one of our missionaries on the field every day of the week, Monday through Saturday.

This past week we had some family fun researching a resort for our field’s annual December missionary retreat.  It was a nice break from city life and Manila traffic to spend  a couple days at the beach in the Subic area.  Finding a beach resort that is restful and within budget is not easy.  I give God full credit for leading us to the restful beach resort where we stayed and making it possible to rent it on the dates of our retreat.
