South Hub Security, Networks, and Social Computing Working Group
Thursday, August 2 | 11:00 a.m. - Noon ET | Virtual | RENCI, Chapel Hill

Presenter:
Kenny Joseph, University at Buffalo | Do real people see fake news on Twitter?

Abstract:
Joseph will discuss results from a paper in which his team examined exposure and sharing patterns of fake news on Twitter by accounts matched to U.S. voter registration records. Their analysis was carried out over a panel of 16,442 voter registration-linked Twitter accounts and over 648M of their potential exposures to political news URLs. Joseph will discuss results regarding the prevalence and concentration of fake news, as well as the structure of the fake news media ecosystem, and touch on difficulties associated with the accurate definition and measurement of fake news in social media. The talk will conclude with some open methodological issues in the broader study of online misinformation. This is joint work with Nir Grinberg, Briony Swire-Thompson, Lisa Friedland and David Lazer.
