Guest speaker Peter Walker
Our next public meeting will take place on Thursday 20 September at 7.00pm in Lecture Theatre 2 of the Richmond Building of the University of Portsmouth. Please arrive for 6.45 pm so we can start on time.
We’re delighted to announce that our guest speaker is The Guardian’s cycling guru Peter Walker. He writes a regular column in the paper, and has written books, including Bike Nation: How Cycling Can Save the World.
In his book Peter takes us on a journey around the world, exploring the varying attitudes to cycling on our highways.
Visit the shining examples of Amsterdam and Copenhagen, where cycling culture is an intrinsic part of the approach of politicians and officials. How have these cities made provision for cyclists and what are the extraordinary benefits?
And then take to the less welcoming roads of Britain, USA and Australia, where cycling can still be a terrifying experience. What are the tragic mistakes being made when planning and developing cities, and how do these mistakes lead to aggression towards the cycling community?

Coastal Defences again!
We might have mentioned this a few times!
But it’s vital we make sure the coastal defences being planned along the seafront are designed for more than just keeping the sea out (vital though that is!). We need provision for cycling to be part of the design, not added on as an afterthought, like the cycle route east of South Parade Pier.
If you didn’t get to one of the consultation events, you can still see the outline plans here, as well a well produced CGI video.
And we need as many people as possible to show how important this is, to residents and visitors, commuter and leisure cyclists, and those who’d like to cycle, but don't feel safe.

Cycle Gosport launched!!
After many years of planning, Cycle Gosport has been launched. Gosport has similar, if not higher, levels of cycling compared to Portsmouth. The group is still quite small, so they want to focus their attentions on routes such as the vital Gosport-Fareham cycle route. This is good in places, but poor or even hazardous others.
Other essential improvements are needed linking into Portsmouth across the Harbour, as well as via Fareham.

New Cycle Links
Often it seems the focus is only on specific cycle routes, without a thought to how to get to them. News from Pedal Portsmouth is that Portsmouth City Council is improving two links to the Eastern Road.
They have widened the path from Blakesley Road in Anchorage Park “to create better access for both pedestrians and cyclists travelling from the residential areas out of the city.
“Next to receive an upgrade is the cycle path along the northern boundary of Milton Common. New lighting is planned for the existing path, while a brand new cycleway will be introduced - linking the north of the common to south. There are also plans to improve cycle access over Eastern Road Water Bridge by removing the barrier along the kerb.”
