Summer Reading Programs are over for this year...deep sigh of accomplishment....what's NEXT?!

Summer Reading has come to an end for the year. I'll have a more complete report of the summer in the next newsletter, but Summer Reading was a success: the kids in Sausalito went on hikes, drew pictures, played in the park, talked to each other, laughed, and did a lot of reading. It was a joyful eight weeks.

Don't forget that kids who signed up for the Reading Challenge by August 4th can continue to collect prizes through September 4th.

So, what happens next?

Regular programming continues, including story times on Mondays and Wednesdays, Middle School Book Club, Building Club, and afternoon movies.

I'm beginning to think about programming for the fall, so I'm interested in hearing ideas for what you would like the Library to offer. I would also love to hear feedback about this year's Summer Reading Program.

We have two new book lists available. One list is of new-ish fantasy novels full of dragons, witches, and magical powers. The other list is about starting school and is full of encouragement about topics like making friends and details about activities like circle time.

As always, let me know if you have questions, thoughts, book list requests or anything else you would like to share.

Best,
Erin

Fall Programming

I'm just beginning to noodle ...

This summer's programs for 9-11 year olds were popular, so can we do more of those during the school year?

So many Sausalito kids are now in middle school, can we offer more middle school programming? Does that even make sense given the tight schedule of middle schoolers?

What about teenagers?

It would be amazing to have a bilingual story time. Should I pursue that again? Should we put our resources into more programming for little kids or spread it more evenly among the grades?

Who is the audience for Wednesday afternoon programs? Preschoolers? Kids 3-6 years old?

What about kids and families not already connected to the Library, can I use programming to reach them?

What are the constraints on programming? Budget? Space? My time? Are any of those flexible? Where can we stretch?

What am I overlooking? What haven't I tried, what am I dreaming about, what am I dreading?

I'm thinking, reading, and talking to other librarians, and I would love to hear from parents and kids about what they would like the library to offer. If you have suggestions, please don't hesitate to send me an email or chat with me at the Reference desk.
Wizards, Dragons, Magical Powers, and More! New-ish Fantasy Novels

Many kids start expressing genre preferences almost as soon as they start reading on their own. These genre preferences are often less about whether there are dragons and magic in the book and more about pace (fast!) and emotional intensity (lots of danger but not a lot of introspection).

I've read so many fantasy novels written for children that I half-believe that fairies and magic are real, and that there is another world and other creatures here among us.

This is a list of fantasy novels published in 2017 or 2018 that were written for kids in fourth grade or older. As always, the stated age range of a book may or may not match an individual child's emotional or technical reading level.

Picture Books About Starting School

Starting school is one of the biggest events in anyone's life. Picture books can help address the myriad of issues attached to starting school, including fears about basic logistics, worries about making friends, and anxiety about being away from parents and familiar caretakers.

Some of these books are about starting kindergarten and some are about starting preschool. The fears can be the same (and even for starting middle school, high school, and college!).
