D1.jobs: New opportunity below at Florida Atlantic. Post your openings here.
Ohio State: ESPN's Dinich tweets, "@OSU_AD Gene Smith told me, 'I can’t comment just yet and I want to let the university investigators do their job. I will certainly have something to say when the time is right.'" (link); Attorney for Courtney Smith: "I can tell you that Ms. Smith is cautiously optimistic that The Ohio State University’s investigative committee will determine if proper reporting protocol was followed upon learning of the ongoing, abuse allegations against Zach Smith. We believe the University must prioritize the safety and well-being of others above all else. While The Ohio State University has never contacted Ms. Smith to discuss these allegations, she will fully cooperate with the university’s current investigation." (link); The Ringer's Schuster doesn't agree with media outlets who gave former AC Smith a platform, "It’s one thing for a sports media outlet to interview Smith; it’s another for it to plaster his face across all of its social media platforms and hype up the conversation like a free-agency special. Perhaps more egregious, Smith was allowed to present his account of the incidents in question largely unpressed. [...] Accounts of domestic violence and sexual assault aren’t new to the sports world, and they won’t be going away. Moving forward, it will be important to recognize the difference between getting both sides of a story and prominently promoting the unverified account of a man whose ex-wife says he abused her. As things stand, it’s clear that not everyone recognizes that distinction." (link); As you may know, a rally was held at Ohio Stadium yesterday in support of on-leave HC Meyer. Here's some video. (link); SBD with a super useful mashup on the situation. (link); Outkick the Coverage's Travis wonders if it's time for someone to ask former Florida AD Foley what he knows. (link)
Thirteen North Carolina FB student-athletes will be suspended for some of the first three games of the upcoming season after selling team-issued shoes. The kicks were Retro Air Jordan 3s & some went for as high as $2,500 per pair. Carolina initially submitted the penalties to the NCAA back in February after fans were chattering on social media. Tar Heels AD Cunningham: "We certainly made a mistake and we will have to suffer the consequences." (link); The News & Observer's DeCock calls it "another compliance black eye." Thesis: "This is, on the whole, a relatively minor violation, a blip compared to everything else North Carolina has been wrangling with over the past eight years, and thought it was done wrangling. But to be back in the stocks so quickly suggests that not enough care is being paid to the details of compliance." More. (link)
Notable Moves: Utah AD Harlan adds COO to Deputy AD Brennan's title, hires USF Interim AD Kull to join him in Salt Lake as Deputy AD for External Operations. Harlan: "Kyle Brennan has been invaluable, not only to me, but to everyone in Utah athletics during the transition period between (former AD) Chris Hill’s retirement and my appointment as Utah’s director of athletics. […] Scott Kull brings a wealth of college athletics administration experience and did a great job as our deputy athletics director at USF for the last two years. He will be a tremendous addition to our team and I was thrilled Scott wanted to join us here at Utah." (link); New Kansas boss Long tabs former Tennessee/Michigan/Florida Assoc. AD for FB Vollmar as Senior Assoc. for FB Administration in Lawrence. Long: "I am pleased to add an administrator of Mike’s caliber and experience to our staff. He understands college football at the highest level and has experienced considerable success at that level." (link); UIC AD Klassy hires Loyola Maryland Asst. AD for Athletic Development Bamonti as the new Senior Assoc. AD for Advancement for the Flames. (link)
Illinois AD Whitman turned 40 on Sunday & penned thoughts on why he's so excited about the future with the Illini faithful, "We have assembled an exceptional coaching staff, led by proven winners and many veteran Illini, all of whom have been rewarded with extended contracts that will keep them in Champaign-Urbana for many years to come. […] We have developed an ambitious plan to upgrade and improve our athletic facilities. […] Our alumni, fans, and donors have stepped forward in significant ways. In the last 2+ years, we have raised more than $50 million in support of Illinois Athletics. […] Fiscally, we have taken a program that operated at a significant deficit in the year I arrived, and in FY18, which we completed on June 30, we returned the program to an operating surplus for the first time in six years. With your help, it is a trend we hope we can continue. […] Perhaps most importantly, we have spent a great deal of time redefining our identity." Whitman points to Unify, Develop, Inspire & Achieve as the four "reasons for being." Continues, "We will motivate them toward greatness. We will instill pride and encourage them toward action. And we will win, in every sense of the word." More, plus lots of good pics & renderings. (link); Whitman also met with the FB program yesterday - looks like he's growing a beard to match HC Smith's - announced the last piece of steel had been laid for the new Football Performance Center with completion expected next year. (link)
The Sporting News' DeCourcy checks in with MBB coaches around the nation on how the expected new summer recruiting calendar could impact the game. From a high-major HC on the east coast, "The issue is, they’re trying to take out the third party, but if you want to take out the third party there’s only one way to do it: Only allow us to do high school recruiting, 24/7/365. Only go to high school gyms whether it’s June, July, August. But not every third party is a bad apple. A lot of third parties give the guidance and the necessary tools to help young people, to guide them where they need to be. […] I don’t think it’s reality to eliminate the third party. Whether it’s a high school coach or grassroots coach or skills trainer, if they’re trying to wheel and deal and get something out of it, then that’s on them and that’s on the college coach that’s doing it." High-major midwest AC, "I think the rules should be much stricter on us, when it comes from the NCAA, on cheating. People outside of our business are going to ask for it if they know they’re going to get it. If they didn’t know they were going to get it from coaches, they would have to go another way if they’re going to try to make money off these kids. We, as the coaches, we make it to where it is now." Additional feedback from recruiting analysts & high school coaches. (link)
The Mercury News' Wilner writes on a greater focus on FB for the Pac-12 Networks in a conversation with networks Prez Shuken. Super important comment from Shuken, "We have to elevate and promote the value of our football product to potential distributors for the next six months and the next six years." New features ready for this Fall to cover action on the gridiron, plus pre-game shows each week from a member campus. New EVP for Content Meyers: "TV used to be a passive medium. The Pac-12 Networks have to be an active medium. We want to break some of the traditional rules … and bring some of the exuberance to the program." (link)
Latest SBJ: Headliner Smith dives into how ACC departments are attacking the coming ACC Network linear launch "in preparation for what they hope will be a cash windfall." Looks like Notre Dame, Georgia Tech, North Carolina & Virginia Tech are spending the most from figures available, $10M+ to get studios & capabilities up to par, Virginia the least at $6M. Cumulatively, you're looking at $120M+, significantly more than the ~$30M SECs spent for their respective launch back in 2014. Perspective from Virginia Tech Senior Assoc. AD for Internal Operations Littlejohn: "You’re always playing catch-up. Some of the schools are feeling the pressure. It’s tough to keep up. One of the things we kept hearing from the SEC was that they wish they’d invested more money on the front end instead of going back every year for another million to fix something." Littlejohn's boss, Tech AD Babcock, thinks the $10M the Hokies are spending could be recouped within just a few years if revenue projections for the network are met. More. (link, link); Smith also profiles ESPN Director of Remote Production Operations Arends, possible the only person who's been involved in the launch of every major conference network. Arends: "It’s all about helping the schools understand what to expect so they’re not trying to figure things out after the gun goes off. […] Before, we were kind of making it up as we went along. Now we have tangible evidence for how to do this." (link); Here's a deeper look into Virginia Tech's plans. (link); Media buff Ourand also gets insights on the Pac-12 Networks' path forward. Commish Scott: "I know that the value of these TV networks is most often measured in dollars and cents, and that is a critical piece. A main purpose of our TV networks was our mission, which was to create a platform to create value and a competitive advantage for all these Olympic sports that we’re so proud of. I feel like we’re only scratching the surface in terms of taking advantage of owning and controlling your own TV network." (link); Western Michigan AD Beauregard is part of the 2018 Game Changers Class. Will be featured in SBJ in early September, celebrated in NYC. (link)

Fun read on up & coming radio broadcasters who cut their teeth in the elite collegiate Cape Cod League. Play-by-play lead of the NHL's Golden Knights D'Uva, described as a mix of Vin Scully & Yoda, mentors the aspiring voices as they call games night after night in towns like Bourne, Chatham, Falmouth, Wareham & Cotuit. Example advice from D'Uva, "Don’t say 'just in the nick of time' when you can say 'safe' or 'out.' Too many words. Your listener is thinking, 'Spit it out.' Add the detail of how close the play was AFTER you make the outcome clear." Some of these cats are likely to make their way over to college sports at some point, so you may want to take note for future recruiting purposes. (link)

On leave Stephen F. Austin FB HC Conque has resigned, "Although I have remained confident in the ongoing investigation into the potential violation of university policy, as a family of faith and out of respect to my profession, I do not want this situation to be a further distraction to the 2018 football team and season. I deeply care for my players and wish them great success this season and beyond." Conque's exit means new Lumberjacks AD Ivey will have an entire season to decide what to do with FB's top spot as Interim HC Byrd will lead the team this season. Ivey: "At this point we remain focused on the 2018 season and the work our student-athletes and staff have done and will continue to do leading up to kickoff on Sept. 1." (link)
Former Maine MBB HC Walsh pens, "Creating A Foundation Of Excellence In College Athletics," for AthleticDirectorU. Starts by running through the state of programs he took over at Rhode Island College (DIII) & with the Black Bears, points to the job done by Ohio State MBB HC Holtmann as a prime example of his key points. "It's a common mistake to have the mindset that you have to wait until you get your own people before you can make any progress. […] The moment you accept a new leadership position, whether it be as a head coach or the head of an company, the players in that locker room or the employees within that organization become your people. […] Those you are tasked to lead, whether you picked them or not, are the most important people in your organization. Embrace them as such." More. (link)
UW-Green Bay AD Guthrie chats it up with 1.Question's @TaiMBrown on his first six months with the Phoenix & specifically an interesting strategy where he called key community stakeholders before even arriving in town to start building relationships. Guthrie: "You're never too far in your career that you can't learn new ideas and concepts. […] Everyone has their 100 day plan and such, but my plan was to work...get going. […] If you work in higher education, you have to understand that the students are the engine that makes the institution go." Twelve-minute listen. (link)
UNC Asheville will work with Collegiate Consulting to develop its next strategic plan. UNCA AD Cone: "We wanted to add a dimension in our planning process that allows us the best opportunity to think globally about the future for the Bulldogs." Collegiate Consulting's Wright: "Our process is inclusive to help the team build a comprehensive strategic plan to provide a roadmap for the future." No word on a timeline. (link)
The Hartford Courant's Anthony lauds outgoing UConn Prez Herbst's understanding of the "athletics-academics partnership." On the effort to get the Huskies into a 'Power 5' conference, Herbst: "Look, I don't expect everybody to follow every twist and turn in this. But one thing I can assure [fans]: me and the athletic directors we’ve had here have worked on this constantly, all the time, behind the scenes, in front of the scenes and around. If people think our situation has something to do with lack of trying, that would not be accurate. This stuff is very complicated. It is very sensitive. It's a lot of relationships. Nobody was asleep at the wheel. It's a structural problem." Herbst points to Football's late arrival into the FBS level as the single factor in why UConn is not in the mix. Lots more here, including her summation of former HC Diaco's tenure: "Cost of doing business. We wanted to be in big-time football and there's a lot of risk and a lot of reward. … Clearly [Diaco] wasn't a fit." (link)
More Personnel: Missouri State Prez Smart stands by FB HC Steckel, despite the coach's negative self-critique. Smart: "Coach Steckel is building a foundation for a successful football program. It takes time. He will get there." (link); Great news for ESPN's Rowe, who completed her last round of chemo yesterday. (link); Western Kentucky AD Stewart goes with Georgia Southern AC Metts as the next HC of the Hilltopper Men's Golf program. (link); Sacred Heart Diving HC Beaver assumes the same role at Wagner. (link); Pittsburgh Volleyball HC Fisher gets an extension through the 2022 season. Organizational experts Peters and Haslam pen for the Harvard Business Review: "To Be a Good Leader, Start By Being a Good Follower." Thesis: "Leadership is a process that emerges from a relationship between leaders and followers who are bound together by their understanding that they are members of the same social group. People will be more effective leaders when their behaviors indicate that they are one of us, because they share our values, concerns and experiences, and are doing it for us, by looking to advance the interests of the group rather than own personal interests." Oklahoma AD Castiglione was inducted yesterday into the Oklahoma Sports Hall of Fame and reflects on his starting days with the Sooners nearly 20 years ago: "It was a real struggle. The engine was sputtering. ... The athletic department was operating in the red by a significant amount back then. I said, 'The only time we’re gonna be in the red anymore is when we’re dressed and ready to go to the Oklahoma Sooner game.'" The secret to financial stability? "Realizing the maximum amount [of revenue] that we can create on our own and living within our means. We’ve been creative, innovative and tried new things." Finally, points to "human capital" as the most important investment: "For me, it’s really about investing in others, and trying to put them in position to be successful. If you really want to figure out why I’m here, look at their success." (link)
The $175M proposed renovation and expansion of the south end zone at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium will be discussed at the University of Texas System Board of Regents meeting on Thursday. Gifts will cover $125M of the effort, with the remaining $50M coming from bond proceeds. Pending approval, construction will begin in June 2019, to be completed prior to first kick in 2021. (link); And over in Athens, where the west end zone project at Sanford Stadium is nearly complete, Georgia AD McGarity: "We are working on plans to enhance the football spaces that are currently in the Butts-Mehre building in the future. We are looking at all type of options. It’s more or less a feasibility and massing exercise now where things could potentially go and how they fit. ... All football spaces will be under review." A larger weight room, additional office space and locker room areas are expected to be part of the upgrades. (link)
San Diego State extends its lease with the city to keep playing football home games at SDCCU Stadium through the 2020 campaign. Pricetag: Aztecs pay $1.1M per season plus all game-day operating costs and "SDSU will also assist the City in marketing the stadium and finding additional revenue-generating events." City keeps all net concessions and parking revenue. SDSU Prez de la Torre: "I want to thank the mayor and members of the City Council for their time and support of our lease extension. Today’s decision is about much more than sports. For San Diego State University, football and other community events serve as the front porch for the university. They allow us to recruit extraordinary students and scholar-athletes who will graduate to become global citizens, ethical innovators and compassionate leaders who impact the San Diego region and beyond." (link)
UT Chattanooga FB student-athletes are wearing "smart vests" during practice, into which Strength & Conditioning HC Pearson has put GPS devices that track things such as heart rate, speed, distance and acceleration. Pearson, who claims the Mocs are the only FCS school using GPS: "What it does is create a competitive atmosphere. When you look at the number of accelerations, the most high-speed yards as an effort thing, you can look at a guy and say, 'Hey, you took today off,' or 'Hey, you had it. You were really bringing it.' It's not that you're trying to catch guys not working, but rather you're creating an environment of getting after it every single day." Looks like the Women's Soccer team also uses the devices. (link)
For the first time since 2012, total pay tv subscriptions increased with traditional tv subs leveling off. SBD's Karp: "CNBC's @davidfaber citing bullish Wall Street analysts as saying that Disney in next report could say ESPN is stemming tide of subscriber losses via virtual MVPDs. Makes sense, because let's be honest, any OTT service worth your time carries ESPN." (linklink); Here's Stadium hype video for the 32 games it will carry this season. (link)
