Soybean Gall Midge

Soybean gall midge was first identified in Iowa in 2016, but this year distribution has spread to more than 12 counties. This pest is relatively unknown, but damage can be severe. I have been scouting for this pest for the past month but have not found it in soybeans fields I have been in, but if you do find evidence of this please email Erin Hodgson. You can learn more about this pest at New Soybean Pest in Iowa: Soybean Gall Midge. Sorry, my photo below is not the best quality, but the orange flecks where the stem is peeled open are the gall midge larvae. Click on the link above to see better photos.

Corn Aphids

Corn Aphids are also increasing in prevalence. They tend to be at higher populations near field edges, but scout the entire field before making any treatment decisions. See Check your Corn For Aphids for information on treatment decisions.
