Younger children are welcome to learn to chant the Hail Mary in Latin, and high school students (and adults) can try the entire prayer.

Lesson Plans

Week 1

  1. Print PDF download on CCWatershed

  2. Practice the Latin pronunciation: Entire Angelus - or - the Hail Mary

  3. Listen to the chant a few times each day and follow along with the text/PDF handout

  4. Tips: Practice speaking one verse at a time each week before singing it. Speak one phrase, and have your kids repeat it back to you. This is the beginning of memorizing and getting used to the words. Go at your child's pace. Listen to the hymn again. Follow along and try to sing with the video.  I love this idea, too: using sticky notes to help with memorization.

Week 2

  1. Listen and follow along.  Learn 2nd verse.

  2. Begin copywork & verse illustrations to aid meditating on the text.

Week 3

  1. Listen and follow along    Here is another recording (when you're ready to sing faster!)

  2. Memorize verse 1. (or what you're ready to do)

  3. Finish copywork & verse illustrations.

  4. Children: Review Be Thou My Vision (Year 4’s September hymn.)

Week 4

  1. Solidify memorization.

  2. Teens/Adults: Watch the first episode of On a Sacred Note "How It Started" from CatholicTV.org

The Angelus

V. Angelus Domini nuntiavit Mariae.
R. Et concepit de Spiritu Sancto.

Ave Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum: benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui Iesus. * Sancta Maria, Mater Dei ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

V. Ecce ancilla Domini,
R. Fiat mihi secundum verbum tuum.

Ave Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum: benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui Iesus. * Sancta Maria, Mater Dei ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

V. Et Verbum caro factum est,
R. Et habitavit in nobis.

Ave Maria, gratia plena; Dominus tecum: benedicta tu in mulieribus, et benedictus fructus ventris tui Iesus.* Sancta Maria, Mater Dei ora pro nobis peccatoribus, nunc et in hora mortis nostrae. Amen.

V. Ora pro nobis, sancta Dei Genetrix,
R. Ut digni efficiamur promissionibus Christi.

V. Oremus.
R. Amen.

V. Divinum auxilium maneat semper nobiscum
R. Et fidelium animae per misericordiam Dei requiescant in pace. Amen.
