Summer High School Internship Program at SMCOE
As part of SMCOE’s third annual summer internship program, we interviewed over 30 students from across the county. We hired seven to work in various departments throughout the County Office of Education, including the STEAM Center, RAFT, and Human Resources. The internship program is a four-week experience where we provide interns with real work experience as well as formal training addressing work ethics, power skills and networking.
Managers found the interns to be a great asset, and shared comments like: “You have no idea how valuable [the intern] was! It was like having two additional admins! We were able to get to things we NEVER have time for! We miss him already!”
The interns found the experience rewarding as well, as one intern shared, “I definitely learned a lot through our training sessions about how the business world differs from high school, the power of communicating effectively and networking. I learned how to get more comfortable in an environment where I didn't really know anybody and had to meet and introduce myself to many people. I also learned a lot about what the ELSS department does and what they're trying to train these teachers for which I thought was really interesting.”
Industry Strategic Planning Session
The CTE team and Industry Advisory Board hosted a Strategic Planning Session with our Super Teams last month. The purpose was to create strategies for aligning school CTE programs with the needs of the workforce. The Super Teams, which included representatives of Biotechnology, Information Technology, Arts, Media and Entertainment, Hospitality, Trades and Transportation, and Financial Empowerment, heard from a panel of experts who shared information on the future of work and how this affects the current students.  Advanced technology is rapidly changing how we work and live. Education is working to meet the current college and career demands facing our students. Some of the challenges mentioned included, "Existing curriculum and project experience are not adequately preparing students, including diverse populations, for the workforce," and "students lack soft skills and are not work ready." The panel also provided some solutions, such as: "Middle schools and high schools need to teach students about the value of work and how work is evolving--emphasis on the importance of lifelong learning." "Teach soft skills early--start in middle school with follow up in high school." "Review curriculum with broader needs of experiential learners who need hands-on learning."

To further the interaction between industry and education, we are hosting a CTE Networking Event on September 26th from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Keep your eyes open for details.
Welcome Our New CTE Coordinator
Tina Smith

Tina Smith has taught science at Carlmont High School for the past 18 years including Biology, AP Biology, Biotechnology 1-2, and Biotechnology 3-4.  She was on the team of teachers who wrote a Specialized Secondary Program Grant and started the Biotechnology Career Pathway (a three-year pathway) in 2002. The Biotechnology Career Pathway became a demonstration site for the California Department of Education, with Tina helping other schools start similar programs. In 2015, Tina helped found the Biotechnology Institute (BTI), a three year, cross curricular program that offers science-themed English and social studies classes as well as a series of courses in biotechnology. Students enrolled in the program receive dual enrollment credit at Skyline Community College, receive one-to-one mentors in a scientific field, and may earn paid internships. Because of her work in STEM, Tina understands the value of helping students gain awareness of the benefits of attending college with a career focus. We are exited to have Tina join our team to further the growing College and Career Readiness initiatives.

Spotlight on Peninsula Family Service
"Thought Leader Series"
The Peninsula Family Service Thought Leader Series was launched in the fall of 2017 as a forum to discuss and galvanize actions on issues of concern to our community.
On June 6, 2018 the second event in the series was held on Financial Empowerment for All.  Local and national experts presented and discussed programs that could support our community in building their financial knowledge and creating financial sustainability. To view the program or the results of the break-out sessions from the day, visit the Peninsula Family Service website via this link: https://www.peninsulafamilyservice.org/financialeducation/.
Please note: For those of you interested in early learning and efforts to professionalize this field, support its teachers and provide the highest-quality early learning for children, the third event in the Thought Leader Series will be held October 17 from 9:00 a.m. to noon at the Mercy Conference Center in Burlingame. Send your RSVP to info@peninsulafamilyservice.org.
Dashboard Dots

The Dashboard is intended to help stakeholders understand and track school and district performance and the progress of student groups based on multiple measures.  Starting in December of 2018, Career Technical Education will be one of the measures included on the Dashboard.

CTE Funding
On July 31, 2018, the President of the United States signed into law H.R. 2353, the Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act,  also known as Perkins V.  It's a six-year authorization using a similar foundation of previous Carl Perkins V legislation, but includes some significant changes, such as an increase in funding. Perkins V also specifies a lot of terminology that will shape how Career and Technical Education (CTE) moves forward, including defining CTE as rigorous, academic content for grades five through adult education, including providing a link to post-secondary education. This stems from the fact that most "good employment" that pays family-sustaining wages requires at least some college education. The bill has a provision stating that no state will receive less funding than it received in 2018. We are waiting to hear from the California Department of Education on the implementation of the Perkins V directives.
