New from On Demand - Getting the best from Technology in your business and personal life.
These days, small businesses cannot survive without technology - love them or hate them, computers, tablets and smartphones are here to stay.  So why not find out how to get the best out of your own technology?   In this workshop Lynette Coulston will show you many simple things your technology can do for you, and that you can do with your technology - to make your business and personal life much more organised, connected, informed and (if you have time) entertained.

Embracing the sustainable office.
The typical office provides a lot of opportunities for being more sustainable, from going paperless to the types of office supplies you choose and use. Here are just a few ideas:
  • Go Paperless - This can be in the form of paperless meetings and going online to read reports, create events, send invitations, book meetings and take notes.
  • Printing - ‘Think’, do you really need to print. If you do, set your printer’s/copier’s default to double sided printing.
  • Reduce, reuse and recycle everything - refuse things you don’t need; reuse items whenever possible e.g. cardboard boxes; recycle everything else e.g.  set up a recycling system for your: mixed recyclables, batteries, mobile phones, small light globes, stationery and organic waste. Recycle ink cartridges through Planet Ark.
  • Beat the plastic: Ban water bottles and plastic bags.  Encourage staff to take a reusable cup for takeaway coffees and promote responsible cafe, which offers discounted coffee if you bring your own cup.  Set up a Boomerang Bags initiative for staff.
  • Choose sustainable products/suppliers - Purchase only environmentally friendly chemical products. Buy stationery/products that are ethically sustainable and made from recycled material.
  • Reduce energy - Set your office temperature at 21-24 degrees Celsius when occupied, install energy efficient light globes and sensor lights for bathrooms and turn off computers and monitors at the end of each day.
  • Add plants - Adding greenery to your office will not only brighten up your office, but it is great for recycling air and improving people’s morale.
Meet the Locals
Celebrating over 100 years of business in Burwood Village
Burwood Village has a special feel to it, with a strong sense of community and passionate traders. Just ask Burwood Cellars, Jagers Carpets and Next Home and Commercial Furnishings: these three businesses share over 100 years of history in this vibrant precinct. So how have they lasted so long? Their love for what they do is one of their key secrets to success. “To be successful we believe you need to love what you do, and we absolutely love serving our customers!” says Paul Kearney of Burwood Cellars. Similarly  for Michael Jagers of Jagers Carpets, that feeling of waking up and wanting to go to work is still there after 40 years in business.

The success of these businesses also stems from their strong focus on family, their support of other local businesses and their exceptional customer service. “Be honest, don’t set high expectations if you can’t meet them and always provide a good service,” says Michael Jagers.

For Amanda Tolhurst of Next Home and Commercial Furnishings, customer satisfaction is “the reason and inspiration for everything we do”. Amanda also believes their willingness “to diversify and change with the times” has helped them succeed over the years.

Meanwhile, Burwood Cellars support local businesses by sourcing their products from family-owned wineries, breweries and distilleries that, like them, love what they do.

Just as Burwood Village has grown over the years, so too have these businesses, though at their core they still uphold hard work, commitment and dedication to their customers, and continue to do what they love.

Hawthorn Enterprise Centre - Space for your business to thrive
For many small to medium size businesses, the struggle to find affordable, flexible and professional office space in a dynamic and supportive environment has been largely unobtainable. For many, this obstacle has made launching and running a successful business difficult. However, in 2013 the Hawthorn Enterprise Centre was established and has been transforming the office space landscape to help provide the foundations business owners require.

With a university degree in Civil Engineering, a Masters in Finance and a string of successful entrepreneur ventures under his belt, Rodrigo Ramirez is the Managing Director and driving force behind the Hawthorn Enterprise Centre. “Our focus is not to fill an office space but rather to uncover the needs of business owners and create custom-tailored solutions. This flexibility and genuine interest to provide a professional working environment where networking opportunities are fostered is what makes the Centre unique.”

With Eva-Maria Heikenwalder more recently joining the team as the Marketing and Customer Relations Manager, more people are discovering the many benefits that the centre offers.  “Not only is the centre situated in a prime business address, but the tranquillity of park-like surroundings also offer the perfect backdrop. We provide a fully serviced office space, meeting and conference rooms, high-speed internet and best of all easy on-site car parking,” says Eva-Maria.

If you’re looking for savings on flexible, customised office space and the benefits of working in a supportive and professional environment, this could be just the solution you are after.
