Klamath Falls Composite Mountain Bike Team

by Lillian Schiavo-Gilmour

If you have been seeing more teens riding mountain bikes in Moore Park and Spence Mtn, this is because Klamath Falls now has a NICA affiliated mountain bike team.  NICA stands for National Interscholastic Cycling Association.

Last summer when Zach Bikes organized mountain bike rides for some of their customer's teens,  we realized, there just isn't enough young people riding bikes on our trails and how fun the teens were having riding with other teens.   When the Oregon League was created this year, I knew that this was a perfect time to get a team started in our area, especially with the new green trails getting built.

NICA's primary objective is to get more kids on bikes thru promoting mountain biking for adventure and fun and its benefits as a healthy outdoor recreational lifestyle.

Founded in 2009, in California, the association now has 22 leagues in 21 states.  Participation in NICA continues to grow almost 40% year over year.  As of 2017,  nationwide 777 teams, there is about 15,000 student athletes and 6,500 coaches.

This February the Oregon League was started to assist with forming teams, training coaches, and race planning.  This fall, there will be 2 races in September, and one in October and November.  At this time, there are 12 teams through out the state, 60 coaches licenced, and expect over 100 student athletes to participate this season.

Klamath Falls Composite has 8 student athletes (2 high school / 6 middle school students) and 7 coaches.  I am proud to say that 37% of our athletes and 50% of our coaches are female (exceeding the 15% national average).  As a NICA affiliated team, we are organized and operate within the 5 core values of NICA Equality, Inclusivity, Strong Mind, Strong Body, and Strong Character.   There are no tryouts, everyone can participates in the races, there are scholarships for those who need it.  We were fortunate to have Zach's Bikes donate one bike for the team and let us utilize some of their demos for some of the athletes who needed a bike, while they were in the process of getting their own.  Also some of their customers have donated equipment and one bike for the team to use.

For the Oregon League, we have a Fall season, which started in July and will end with our last race in November.  We can still register riders up to our first race in September.  We hold practices 3 times a week.  Midweek rides are at Moore Park trails and weekend rides are at Spence Mountain.  With  the smokey conditions we have been doing indoor workouts at CrossFit APE, who has been generous to let the team bring our bikes inside and we ride on trainers with a structured workout program.  In such a short time, I have seen some of our beginner riders get stronger and more confident on the trails.   The team has gone thru riding skills workshops, a basic bike repair clinic, and is taught proper trail and riding ettiquette and how to ride safely as a group.   If you know any one who will be in the 6th thru the 12th grade this fall who would be interested in joining the team, please have them contact me at lillian.kfcmtb@gmail.com or 541-892-7894.  Also check out our facebook page - Klamath Falls Composite with more detail and links to NICA and the Oregon League.
