One Nottingham Voluntary and Community Sector
Strategic Reference Group
The Voluntary and Community Sector Strategic Reference Group (VCSSRG)  met in June and appointed a new chair Linny Beaumont from the Princes Trust, who will join the ON Board from September.
Last year One Nottingham set up the VCS Strategic Reference Group to support the One Nottingham Board and be a strategic voice for the Voluntary and Community sector by:
  • Identifying issues affecting the city and collaborating with a range of partners to formulate responses to these.
  • Representing the views of the wider voluntary and community sector and raising issues or concerns brought by VCS organisations to the One Nottingham Board.
  • Promoting the VCS by ensuring partners are aware of the contribution, scale and skill-set of the VCS.
  • Being a conduit between the One Nottingham Board and the wider VCS.
The group is currently working on a number of key priorities, including:
  • Supporting the VCS to have a stronger strategic voice and influence key commissioning and delivery decisions in the City; in particular regarding mental health services and support to young people.
  • Building the capacity of the voluntary sector to better engage with the private sector to harness their support through corporate social responsibility.

THE JOY OF READING
During the summer many people go on holiday with their books all packed for the beach. Most newspapers and magazines have summer reading specials recommending books to enjoy. It’s a fact that many Nottingham people won’t get away or will have their beach experience on the Nottingham beach.
A priority for One Nottingham is to enable more people to learn to read and enjoy reading. So we thought that it would be a good idea to highlight some of the things happening in Nottingham and what we are doing to support those who find reading a bigger challenge.  Two of the great initiatives ON has supported and helped develop are the Dolly Parton Imagination Library in Nottingham and the Nottingham Literacy Hub - Read On Nottingham.

A Marathon a Day - on the Pennine Way

Councillor Jon Collins, the leader of Nottingham City Council will walk 10 Marathons, 267 miles, in 10 days. He will walk from the bottom of the Pennine way in
Derbyshire to the Scottish Borders.
This challenging expedition will raise funds for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, and will buy books for more Nottingham children from birth to their fifth birthday.

You can sponsor this trek and get more details at:

Hoodwinked and the BookBenches

This month Wild in Art and Nottingham City Council launched the Hoodwinked public art event around the city. More than 30 robin sculptures, each sponsored by a business and individually decorated by artists, are on display at locations such as Nottingham Playhouse, Old Market Square, Nottingham Forest and the Victoria Centre for families to enjoy until the end of September.
The Hoodwinked trail is proving really popular with visitors and lots of people are loving our cute characters as they hunt for them across the city in a huge game of hide and seek.
There is a Hoodwinked App where you can punch in the robin codes to collect rewards and to find out all about the sculptures and the artists.

BookBenches
52 schools from across Nottingham have also decorated BookBenches – large sculptures shaped like open books - as part of this citywide learning programme. The benches will also appear on the Hoodwinked trail alongside the Robins. Once finished, they will return to the schools as permanent literacy 'inspiration stations.’

The Read On Nottingham campaign has created a quiz to accompany the trail which you can download on Read On website. Answer questions on at least eight robin sculptures and you could win a bundle of books!

Business Books and the Big Breakfast

In June, Councillor Webster, City Council Portfolio Holder for Adult Social Care and Health, hosted a ‘Business and Books Big Breakfast’ at Loxley House.  The event aimed to highlight the importance of early literacy skills in children, as well as helping to raise funds for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.

Pupils from Bluebell Hill Primary School were read to by business leaders from across the city. The Business and Books Breakfast raised £550 for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library.  Thank you to all of those businesses who took part.

You can read more about the Big Breakfast online here: http://www.mynottinghamnews.co.uk/business-breakfast-event-to-help-boost-child-literacy-levels/

Summer Reading Challenge

There are plenty of events taking place at Nottingham libraries this summer, including the Summer Reading Challenge, which encourages children to read six books (or more) during the school holidays, Spark Arts performances of The Gingerbread Man and the launch of the new Strelley Road facility.

Visit the Read On Nottingham website for more details of key Nottingham libraries events this summer.

The National Literacy Trust’s Words For Work programme, which gives pupils the literacy skills they need to succeed in the world of employment, has called on the help of volunteers from law firm Browne Jacobson.

Employees at the firm welcomed students from Nottingham Academy and Bulwell Academy and demonstrated how both skills in oracy and written communication are essential to success in the working world. Students were encouraged to focus on the skills they thought they needed to improve on and volunteers helped boost pupils’ confidence by sharing their top tips for interviews.

Mr Men 4 Nottingham
On 31 August, the Mr Men will be hosting a special book-gifting event in Old Market Square. Be like Little Miss Wise and watch out for more information.

More events are shortly to be announced, to engage Nottingham people and partners such as the Reading Festival in the Spring, and the month long Dad’s Reading Selfies Campaign.

Future Sound of Nottingham and the NUSIC Schools Tour

ON continues to support NUSIC to encourage school students to look at all aspects of the music industry as a serious career choice.  A feature of this initiative has been the NUSIC Nottingham Schools Tour in which music professionals visit schools to perform and talk to students about a career in music. Earlier this year ON was presented with a gold disc as over 15,000 students have now taken part.
Did we foresee this moment? When ON invested in Notts music and helped launch NUSIC,  the ON Board might not have expected that 10 years on the latest NUSIC stars are young men dressed in spandex!
