Lincolnshire Annual Armed Forces Covenant Conference

The Lincolnshire Annual Armed Forces Covenant Conference was held this year at the International Bomber Command Centre in Lincoln.The Centre held its official opening earlier in the year and the Conference was a fantastic opportunity for delegates to see this impressive venue in person.

Nearly 80 delegates attended the conference making the most of the valuable opportunity to network with organisations from all sectors, including the Armed Forces, Veterans, Reservists and the Voluntary and Charitable Sector.

Speakers on the day included John Shivas from the Armed Forces Covenant Trust Team in London, Catherine Foster from the Jon Egging Trust and Paul Drury from Lincolnshire County Council, who is himself a veteran.

Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust Update

The Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust has recently announced the latest round of endorsements of 29 grants totalling £415,217, under its Armed Forces Covenant- Local Grants priority.

Challenging society's disservice to a new generation of veterans

The report warns of a younger generation of veterans who feel increasingly alienated from society.

SSAFA believes that the disturbing disconnect between younger veterans and the rest of the nation cannot simply be left to the government, or the military to resolve and must be addressed by society as a whole.
 
More than half of all SSAFA veterans experienced problems within the first year of leaving the Armed Forces. Despite all the efforts made to prepare service leavers for the day they left their barracks for the final time, their research shows that too many were ill-equipped to face the outside world.

The younger the veteran, the more likely this was to be the case; 87% of veterans aged 18-24 experienced difficulties within the first year of transition.

Children's Commissioner Publishes Report 

The report, ‘Kin and Country: Growing up as an Armed Forces Child’, explores how primary and secondary school children with parents in the Armed Forces feel about moving school or country, how their lives at home and school change with deployment and whether or not they feel they receive the support they need.

Armed Forces Mental Health

Veterans are not ‘mad, bad or sad’, says House of Commons Defence Committee. According to Part 1 of a Report by the Defence Committee on the extent of mental illness among Armed Forces personnel the public perception that most Service men and women are damaged by their service is wrong.

Part 2 of the inquiry examining provision of care given to Armed Forces has also been launched.
